Sunday 9 May 2010, Movie night: The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, Jamaica, 1972) – May’s theme of the Joe’s Garage film nights: OUTLAWS
Today a portrait of a Jamaican reggae outlaw. The Harder They Come, cult film from Perry Henzell, realized in 1972, starring music legend Jimmy Cliff, who plays Ivan O. Martin, a character inspired by a legendary 1950s Jamaican outlaw named Ivanhoe Martin, better known as Rhygin. Famous for its groovy soundtrack, the film is certainly no musical. It’s an unvarnished snapshot of life in post colonial Jamaica, religion, corruption, marijuana, misery. Henzell: “I consider myself a real filmmaker the way Ken Loach or Cassevettes is.”
