Eenhorn Filmavond presents: City of God

CidadedeDeus

Sunday 16th March 2014, Movie Night: Eenhorn Filmavond presents Cidade de Deus (City of God), by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund (2002, 130 minutes), Portuguese language with English subtitles. Door opens at 8pm, film begins at 9pm.

Set in the notorious favela of Rio de Janeiro, this exuberant tale recounts the coming of age story of two very different characters – Rocket who dreams of being a photographer but is constrained by the slum and Li’l Zé who sees an opportunity in drug trafficking.  Their story is intertwined with a set of other characters: amateur criminals, Li’l Zé’s partner who wants better life than crime, a man looking out for revenge and finally Li’l Zé’s rival dealer – amongst many others.  But City of God is much more than a set of tales, it is the story of an entire community filled to the brim with life and energy, even though it is burdened with hardship.
Based on a novel written in 1997.  Many of the actors in the film actually came from the real-life City of God.

Film night at Joe’s Garage, warm and cozy cinema! Doors open at 8pm, film begins at 9pm, free entrance. You want to play a movie, let us know: joe [at] squat [dot] net
