The benefit of this voku will go to family from the village Bil’in in the occupied West Bank.
Bil’in is located 4 km east of the Green Line, near the Israeli separation barrier in the West Bank, a barrier that the International Court of Justice ruled, on 9 July 2004, to be contrary to international law.
Since January 2005, the village has organized weekly protests against the construction of the Wall. These protests have attracted media attention and drawn participation from Israeli leftist groups such as Gush Shalom, Anarchists Against the Wall, and the International Solidarity Movement. The protests take the form of marches from the village to the Wall’s construction site, aiming to halt construction and dismantle what has already been built. Often, these protests escalate into confrontations between occupation soldiers and village youths, involving the firing of live ammunition and tear gas by the soldiers and the throwing of stones by the youths; occupation forces have employed various measures to suppress the protests, including curfews, night raids, and the arrest of residents.
Several clashes broke out between demonstrators and Israeli occupation forces, resulting in numerous injuries among the Palestinian citizens- including severe ones – and claiming the lives of several martyrs, among them Emad Burnat’s nephew, Islam Burnat. The young martyr Islam Wael Burnat (16 years old) was from the village of Bil’in, west of Ramallah. He was martyred on 18 May 2021, after being shot in the head by occupation forces while participating in a peaceful march held in solidarity with Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. He was a tenth-grade student.
The benefit of this voku will go to Emad Burnat’s family, which, among other families in Bil’in, have been heavily involved in the struggle and fight for freedom of this village and its people.
