Benefit Voku for ‘We are here’, undocumented migrants action group

Thursday January 16 2014, Benefit Voku for ‘We are here’, undocumented migrants action group. Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm

Since the end of 2012, a large group of undocumented migrants and asylum seekers started a protest aimed at challenging current migration policies, criminalisation, militarisation of borders, and deportation procedures. In the few months the size of the group grew to 220, and despite the attempts by politicians to divide and disperse them, they started squatting buildings in order to stay together, become visible, and organise their political actions. After the Notweg tent camp, the Vluchtkerk, the Vluchflat and Vluchtkantoor squats and their eviction, the group has eventually been divided: one part was offered temporary shelter in a ‘former’ prison under strict conditions, the other half was left on the street, and soon squatted yet another building in Amsterdam Zuidoost (Vluchtgarage). Although squatting is for them a tool to stay string together, further political mobilisation and pressure is still needed not only for them to obtain residence permits, but also for creating a world without borders, where migration is not treated as a crime and everybody is free to move and settle. The donations of this benefit will be used as a ‘action group’ pot, as support for the actions and mobilisation of the group, such as demos, court cases, fines etc. Bring yourself and your friends to donate, to get more information by the members of the group and to get involved.
