Benefit and Info-night about JAAN (Jakarta Animal Aid Network)

Monday October 26th 2015, Benefit and Info-night about JAAN (Jakarta Animal Aid Network). Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm.

Thousands of animals in Indonesia live sad lives. They are often chained, caged, neglected, tortured and abandoned. JAAN is a non-profit organization that strives to reduce their suffering and provide them better living conditions. They believe that no animal deserves cruelty and no wild animal should spend its life in captivity.

Tonight, some members of the organization will join us and gives us more information about the ongoing campaigns and their work in Indonesia.
JAAN operates solely on donations from individuals and does not receive any financial support from the government so all the benefit from the evening will go to support them on their work.

CNA/ABC supports anarchist and other class struggle prisoners, fund-raise on behalf of prisoners in need of funds for legal cases or otherwise, and organize demonstrations of solidarity with imprisoned anarchists and other prisoners. More info www.abajolosmuros.org
(only in Spanish).

“We believe that prisons serve no useful function and should be abolished along with the state. We believe in direct resistance to achieve a stateless and classless society.”

The [ABC] also works to build alliances with the communities and the social and poltical movements that the prisoners participated in prior to their incarceration. Through these alliances, we work toward increasing the awareness about various liberation movements and the political prisoners associated with the movements. It is through these
coalitions that we continue to ensure that imprisoned comrades are not forgotten by their movements or our own. […Lees verder]

Info-night and benefit for Prosfygika occupied neighbourhood in Athens, Greece

Monday October 27th 2014: Info-night and benefit for Prosfygika occupied neighbourhood in Athens, Greece, Volkseten Vegazulu, 19:00.

“Prosfygika”, or otherwise refugee homes, is a complex of residential flats built in 1930’s to house refugees resulting from the Asia Minor conflict between Greece and Turkey. The buildings are situated on a central avenue of Athens, surrounded on either side by the police HQ and the supreme court, in a heavily gentrified area . After years of abandonment, Prosfygika has been increasingly reclaiming its original purpose as many refugees, migrants, poor, greek and foreigner working class people have sought to resolve their need for housing by squatting the empty flats.

For some years now, people from the neighbourhood have organized on the basis of collective procedures and communal resources in order to meet the daily and particular needs of the neighbourhood. The ceaseless activity of the community of Occupied Prosfygika includes building maintenance, baking bread, collective cooking, laundry facilities, making soap, a school for migrants and locals and hosting refugees on emergency basis. The evolution of the self organized community has emerged from the initiatives of an assembly with horizontal procedures (which has been active in the neighbourhood since 2011). This assembly participates in the movement of class and social struggle expressing its solidarity in a number of ways. […Lees verder]

Movie night: Ekümenopolis – city without limits (Turkey, 2011)

Sunday October 12th 2014, Ekümenopolis – city without limits. Directed by Imre Azem 2011, 93 minutes, in Turkish with English subtitles. Door opens at 8pm, film begins at 9pm.

Eukemonopolis is documentation about neo liberal city development in Istanbul and the aspiration of its political leaders of turning it into a global city, one of those cities like London, Tokyo, Amsterdam or São Paulo, that shape globalisation and form the network of global cities where the service, banking and real estate businesses accumulate, where mega events takes place and a hegemonial hipster culture is cultivated. While the global alpha, beta and gamma cities posses the intellectual knowledge, tools and power the global division of labour is further extended, with the majority of factory production being outsourced to those parts of the world where people earn a shit for their 60 hours working week, have no labour rights whatsoever and endanger their health and well being by working in super precarious conditions, let alone the environmental destruction that this system of global division of labour provokes. Eukomonopolis shows quite in detail what the negative effects of repressive neo liberal urban development in Istanbul mean to local citizens and to the city’s natural environment while it also explains concepts like the global city (which was developed by Saskia Sassen) so that we can look at our own living environment and have more tools at hand to better understand what happens around us and affects us. We can develop strategies and actions to be solidare with the exploited people worldwide and get active locally in order to develop and realise our own strategies in contrast to that what is opposed on us by the state and its institutions, urban planners and the capitalistic system.

As further background  we want to provide a text about urban development in the city which is part of more a comprehensive report about squatting in the Istanbul and a collection of reports about radical grassroots neighborhood and factory organisation provided by the the solidarity campaign for left neighborhoods in Istanbul, translated from german to english. Even though the documentary does not relate those particular stories, those texts may shed some light on local resistance against the urban development that takes place in the city.

Benefit dinner for ART+ACTION in Bilin, occupied Palestine

Monday September 29th 2014: Benefit dinner for ART+ACTION in Bilin, occupied Palestine. Volkseten Vegazulu, 19:00.

The Popular Struggle Committee In Bilin & ImaginAction are organizing a gathering in October with many international artists. The program will include giant puppet making, mural painting, olive harvesting, participation in local political actions and an intensive Forum Theater workshop (see below) culminating in public performances within Bil’in and neighboring villages. A series of evening cultural events will feature performances and presentations by Palestinian and International actors, singers, musicians and filmmakers.

Bil’in is one of many Palestinian villages engaged in ongoing, unarmed struggle against Israel’s policy of settler colonialism and military occupation. Over the past decade, Israel has confiscated almost 60% of village land and used it for the construction of Israeli settlements and the apartheid wall. Weekly demonstrations against these illegal activities have included a multitude of creative, non-violent actions led by Palestinian activists with support from allies around the world. Theaterstraat, rise from the ashes together!

Monday August 25th 2014: Benefit for ‘Theaterstraat, rise from the ashes together!’, Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm.

Another Theaterstraat Benefit dinner!

On December 2nd 2013 a big fire burned the warehouse of the TheaterStraat collective to the ground. TheaterStraat is well-known for their support during demonstrations and events with their iconic yellow-red stage truck, but also provides transportation with their coaches, logistical support and loads more for diy activist and cultural events.

The trucks and coaches were saved, but all the rest is gone (sound equipment, stage lighting, mixing desks, the tents, containers, tools, the ware-house, the office and so on and so forth. A big mess and an awfull damage and loss!

Thanks to the hands and donations of many, a part of the warehouse and some of the technical equipments is by now cleaned, recovered or replaced. People are still rebuilding, a 5th of the damage got covered by the transport insurance, and an alternative revolutionary crowd funding and other donations also brought in money, so that now half of is covered – but still more is needed.

Therefore, a comité “Help Theaterstraat uit de Brand” together with Paradiso organise a benefit party at Paradiso on Sunday 31st of August with acts of De Kift, The Ex, Kalio Gayo, Fanfare van de Eerste Liefdesnacht and DJ kollectief Kansloos & Schuifdicht, where also burned art and foto’s from the damage will be auctioned. Come all!

This dinner tonight at Joes hopefully makes a small contribution as well. Come and EAT!
