The evening will screen a 30 min video called “Cinema and Esperanto” where approximately 20 feature films using somehow Esperanto are illustrated. The video is in English with English subtitles. Q&A on the topic will follow.

The Esperanto Workshops start again at Joe’s! As this for this evening, there will be events open to everybody, regardless if they want the learn the language, and a course at two levels: absolute beginners and intermediate. We present the Esperanto phenomenon — language and culture — after watching together the Esperanto docufilm directed by Ida van Koolwijk as her final thesis in Visual Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam. What will follow is a presentation of the course.

How to make a screen print poster? This workshop is about hands on poster making with GIMP for multi-color screen printing, just as Joe’s monthly posters are done.

The main focus will be put on the steps to be performed in GIMP, a free software graphic editor available for all major operating systems, in order to produce proper files and designs to be used for screen printing.

The final result can then be send to your local screen print collective for large series of copies but could also be used as blueprint for d.i.y. silk screens.

# We will use GIMP as graphical tool (http://www.gimp.org).

# No further knowledge of GIMP necessary

# We have a beamer for visualisation

# Bring your own laptop if possible, with GIMP already installed, so that we do not need to spend time installing software.

# If you already have some designs ready, bring them along

Thursday 28th April 2022, Esperanto course #11.

Esperanto was invented in 1887 by a Polish ophthalmologist named L.L. Zamenhof, who hoped his creation would help to bridge differences which stem from language barriers. Zamenhof saw a turbulent world divided by language, and he believed that the languages people already spoke were over saturated with history, politics, and power, making it impossible to communicate clearly. Esperanto was a fresh start, a technology that would allow its speakers to sidestep the difficulties of natural languages altogether.
He made it as easy to learn as possible, with no irregular verbs, a vocabulary adapted from Romance language roots, and a simple, genderless, almost caseless grammar.

As an exceptional case, we will watch together a documentary by Sam Green about the history of Esperanto, titled “The Universal Language”, i.e. the universal language.

How to put together long zines and short books for print using only open source tools.

We will look at the difference between the text-centred applications (commonly used by writers) and applications that use the blank page as their starting point. The latter are referred to as desktop publishing software, and they are often quite daunting to those of us who are not professional designers.

The idea of this session is to dive into the deep end of easy software and swim towards the shallow end of complicated tools. We will therefore tour the advanced capabilities of text processors like LibreOffice (a free alternative to MS Wrd, or whatever it’s called these days) and explore the basics of desktop-publishing software like Scribus (a free replacement for Indsign).

For the covers and artwork we quickly dip into photoshop-like utilities such as GIMP. This workshop is geared towards preparing printed material, so people who are interested in making flyers and posters are very welcome too.

Trashy frozen pizza available. Bring your own fancy vegetarian pizza if you prefer.

Doors open at 18:00, workshop starts at about 18:30.
