Esperanto course #2 – Zamenhof Day

Esperanto course #2 – Zamenhof Day, 15 December 2021, from 18:00 to 21:30

Esperanto was invented in 1887 by a Polish ophthalmologist named L.L. Zamenhof, who hoped his creation would help to bridge differences which stem from language barriers. Zamenhof saw a turbulent world divided by language, and he believed that the languages people already spoke were over saturated with history, politics, and power, making it impossible to communicate clearly. Esperanto was a fresh start, a technology that would allow its speakers to sidestep the difficulties of natural languages altogether.

He made it as easy to learn as possible, with no irregular verbs, a vocabulary adapted from Romance language roots, and a simple, genderless, almost caseless grammar.

Come and learn the basics of Esperanto and experience for yourself how easy it is to learn!

There´ll also be some proficient Esperanto speakers (esperantistoj) present at the event so you´ll have a chance to hear what a conversation in Esperanto actually sounds like!

Proxy Cafe, Anarchist Subtitling Workshop

Proxy Cafe, Anarchist Subtitling Workshop, 8 and 10 December 2021

On this day-and-a-half-long workshop we will be playing around with free open source software, in our case, subtitling software Aegisub. Then we move on to learning some subtitling techniques and questioning /all/ the rules.

DAY 1 – Wed. 8 Dec 18.00-20.00 – THE TOOLS
Besides your laptop (all systems welcome, though we’ll pay special attention to Linux), please make sure to bring a mouse, your own headphones, and any adapters you might need. Remember that in order to install new software you will need to know your admin password.
You can also bring your own video fragment if you want to do a personalized subtitling exercise. Pick a ten minute clip in the language of your choice that contains shot changes and features at least two actors or speakers in a dialogue. If you need help plucking that video footage out of the internet we can probably do that on Day 1.
Let us know if you are planning to come, and tell us your languages and areas of interest. That way we can prepare suitable exercise videos.

DAY 2 – Fri 10 Dec, 14.00 – 20.00 – MATH, POETRY AND POLITICS

On Day 2, we would like to concentrate on less technical activities. You’ll be working on your laptop, using Aegisub, subtitling a selected video fragment.

The ForkedTongue translators’ collective [ forkedtongue at weho dot st ] is kindly hosted by

Your thoughts are free and so are your hands – so come to Joe’s garage on Friday 29th for a free, social creative night.
Bring and share whatever art supplies you have – paper, paint, pencils, clay, glue or glitter, old magazines (for collage making) or even beads and wires if making jewellery is your thing. If you don’t have any supplies, you are still more than welcome – we will have plenty! You can work with any medium (with respect to the space, of course) and there is no pressure to make anything specific – you can also just come to play with clay.
We will provide the ambience, company and a space to share your art, donation based.
