Two events for APATRIS greek anarchist newspaper with live music

Thursday 21 and Friday 22 June 2018, two benefit events for APATRIS greek anarchist newspaper. Both days with vegan food from 7pm. On Friday 22,  Rebetiko music from Xarris and Mitsos.

The street newspaper APATRIS began in 2009 from Heraklion (Crete) and for a year was distributed only locally. In 2010, comrades from other places in Crete began to collaborate with the project. Since then and for about 2.5 years APATRIS has been issued as a Pancreatan anarchist newspaper.

The basic standpoint of the initial editorial team, according to the editorial of the first issue (March 2009), referred to the inability of existing information structures to be used as reliable means of news broadcasting and free expression and therefore any attempt with a reformist character would not be effective. As a means of counter-information, APATRIS may contribute to the co-production of an independent social discourse. As a result, the individual responsibility of each author is stressed. They claim that: “The purpose of this publication is not to shape a common line or agenda that suggests the soundest solution. Our aim is to hear opinions not necessarily in complete agreement with each other, views and events carefully buried by the mass media and altered under the weight of authoritarian interests, but also to perceive the developments around us in order to develop our texts and our actions”.

APATRIS made a call for a meeting to all existing counter-information media in Greece. The meeting finally took place on June 29, 2013 in Heraklion, Crete. Different collectives active in counter-information took part (Athens Indymedia, Candia Alternativa, Radio Revolt, 98 fm, Espiv, APATRIS, etc). Similar initiatives had taken place in the past (Thessaloniki 2011, Athens) in reaction to the repression of various counter-information media. These past meetings highlighted the need for more structured, regular and nationwide series of meetings.

About Enough=Enough

IT’S CODE RED FOR GRONINGEN AND THE CLIMATE! Gas must stay in the ground and all the earthquake damage needs to be compensated. But the NAM, Shell and Exxon keep on pumping. And the government is allowing this to happen.

THAT IS WHY WE ARE DRAWING A LINE: from the city to the countryside, from Groningen and beyond, we are joining forces around Groningen’s liberation day on the 28th of August. With the first mass action of civil disobedience in Groningen we are sending out a powerful signal: leave the gas in the ground! Everyone can contribute, experience is not required.

Together with people from Groningen, Code Rood is also organising an ACTION CAMP IN GRONINGEN from 24 to 31 August. Here, we will offer a wide programme of workshops, trainings and open discussions about gas extraction and a fossil free world. And in the evenings there’ll be a campfire and music. You can stay at the camp overnight, or drop by for a day visit.

Rosa Luxemburg (1986)

Sunday 17 June 2018, Movie night: Rosa Luxemburg (1986). Die Geduld der Rosa Luxemburg, by Margarethe von Trotta. German with English subtitles | 123 min.
Doors 20:00 | Film 20:30

“Freedom is always the freedom of the one who thinks differently.”

Rosa Luxemburg (1871-1919): german-polish socialist, docorate in a time when women couldn’t graduate on German universities, speaker of the Left in the Labour Partry 20 before women in Germany gained the right to vote, co-founder of the Spartakus group, icon of the student movement in Germany. Margarethe von Trotta’s film “The patience of Rosa Luxemburg” tells her story, but als paints a clear picture of the economic and social situation in Germany before the First World War.

Von Trotta didn’t work to on the basis of the ledgend. She didn’t deal with the different views of her, didn’t explain anything, didn’t justify anything. She lets Rosa Luxemburg speak for herself. The basis of the scenes and dialogues in the film are mainly the 2500 letters Luxemburg send to friends and comrades. The film only shows what can be documented in such a way – the film is radical and subjective because it is only commit to one truth: the truth of Rosa Luxemburg herself.

Drum in the Rhythms of Resistance : A Benefit Dinner

Monday June 11th 2018, Drum in the Rhythms of Resistance : A Benefit Dinner. Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm.

The Rhythms for Resistance (RoR) is a network of activists who use music, dance and rhythms inspired by samba as a form of resistance to capitalism, racism, fascism, neoliberalism in our society. It is a network of bands across the world and here in the Netherlands there is a small group as well. The samba has been crucial for many of our demonstrations and occupation across the Netherlands and across Europe.
It is voluntary and does not have any income generating projects. RoRies pay for their own costs and depend on donations or small funds to replace parts or instruments. Right now, the RoR network is in need of support for the role it plays in movement building and is organising benefit dinners across Amsterdam. Come join us, get to know the RoR and enjoy a lovely Asian meal with dessert.

Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Solo (Jean-Pierre Mocky, 1970)

Sunday 10 June 2018, Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema.
SOLO, 1970 Directed by Jean-Pierre Mocky 83 minutes. In French with English subtitles.
Doors open at 20:00. Intro starts at 20:30

Once the revolution of May ’68 collapsed, there were few brave enough to discuss what had happened. Some directors like Godard continued, but in a more underground way. This flick was one of the few that managed to fuse some of the ideas of May with the predominant movie industry. Most films dealing with this taboo subject were totally marginalized, but this one slipped through the door.

This isn’t only directed by the notorious Jean-Pierre Mocky but he also stars in it – and he comes off a bit like a less cynical version of Alain Delon. This flick was connected to what was really happening in France during the post-68 crisis, but stylistically it was ahead of its time. Italian ‘police films’ would explode in the mid-70s, but this film already has the poise and determination of those movies in tact. Graced with a moody soundtrack the story focuses on a diamond smuggler who cares nothing for the political upheaval of ’68, but when his revolutionary brother is being chased by the cops, he is forced to help his brother get away. By doing so, he becomes a target himself. This alarming movie shows how the more radical elements of the May events would be hunted down afterwards.

An amazing little flick, wonderfully directed. In its own way it’s a masterpiece, but one that was never screened outside France. In other words, this is another outrageously rare screening.

Benefiet diner #4 voor Jalazone vluchtelingenkamp!

Monday June 4th 2018, Benefiet diner #4 voor Jalazone vluchtelingenkamp! Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm.

SRP are back in Joe’s Garage for our fourth benefit dinner. Part of our fundraising campaign for Jalazone, a project to support building a playground for the children in the camp.
Last summer SRP visited Jalazone camp during one of our annually organised trips to Palestine. The living circumstances of the Palestinians in this refugee camp left a lasting impression on the group. Motivated by what they had seen they asked the local women’s collective for advice. Out of this conversation, a fundraising project for the building of a children’s playground was formed.
