Cinema Swiss: Little escapes (Yves Yersin, 1979)

Sunday 6 November 2022, Les Petites Fugues aka Little Escapes (Yves Yersin, 1979). In French with English subtitles. Doors open at 20:00, Film starts at 20:30.

Swiss documentary filmmaker Yves Yersin has also made one fiction film, and it is a masterpiece. In Little escapes (“Les petites fugues”), a 65-year-old Swiss farmhand named Pipe (played by comedian Michel Robin) discovers what freedom is. His freedom is not offered to him, but instead he conquers it, with “little escapes,” which invariably meet with disapproval from his boss. The farmer John (Fred Personne) believes that, except on Sundays, Pipe should simply always show up for work. At the end of the film, Pipe rebukes John: farmhand work is Pipe’s job, and so it is up to him to decide when to leave it for a while. Pipe’s personal revolution coincides with major social transformations in the 1970s, such as democratization, women’s emancipation, technological innovation, migration and tourism. With his newly acquired moped, Pipe experiences it all – but also discovers that his old habits please him as well.

Cinema Italia: Selfie (Agostino Ferrente, 2019)

Sunday 30 October 2022, Cinema Italia: Selfie (Agostino Ferrente, 2019), 78 minutes. In Neapolitan and Italian with English subtitles. Doors open at 20:00, Film starts at 20:30.

This documentary has been shot by Neapolitan teenagers living in Traiano, a neighbourhood where Camorra, the local Mafia, is an everyday presence. And yet their stories tell not only about violence but also friendship, hope, and intimate relations. The director gave a phone to them, letting them choose the way to tell their lives. A film made possible by smartphones only, where subjectivity and objectivity are inextricably intertwined in a unique mix, that opens a window to an angle of the world otherwise impossible to see for outsiders.

Aman molli: Benefit voku for the Ypostego social centre and Rebetiko night

Friday 28 october 2022, Aman molli: Benefit voku for the Ypostego social centre and Rebetiko night. Food served from 7pm, no reservation. Music on the stage from 9pm.

Ypostego is a social center based in the southern suburban part of Athens with long history in activism and solidarity actions. The building is very old with no complete maintenance done in these years. Recently, some houses started to be built exactly next to Ypostego. Due to the drilling and excavations in order to create the foundations of theses houses the ceiling of Ypostego fell. The cost of repairing the ceiling and also fixing spots on it that will fall in the next months is way too high. We, a group of comrades that used to be actively participating or actively solidaire to that place when we were based in Athens, decided to organize an event with Rebetico music in order to gather some money for helping covering the costs as minimal act of solidarity.

What is Punks for Rojava?

Punks for Rojava is an international network in the punk community with the goal of providing support for Rojava and educating people about what is happening in Rojava and the ideology on which their society is built. The common ground between the society in Rojava, which is based on an ideology/political system called Democratic Confederalism has many similarities with the ideology of the international punk community, and rejects the idea of nation-states, religious influence on society, dictatorship in all its forms, as well as capitalism. It’s ‘based on direct democracy, total gender equality, secularism, ethical pluralism and ecology.

The situation

Right now, Rojava is heavy under attack by the Turkish state, using chemical weapons and bombing and attacking civilians. They mutilated bodies of dead female soldiers, looted villages and towns and made living conditions for civilians in the area impossible. With the Punks for Rojava we hope to create awareness about Rojava itself and to give heart to our internationalist comrades. The donations will be used to purchase gas masks for civilians to protect themselves from the chemical attacks and to the fighters trying to protect Rojava.
Currently, we are setting up our first benefit in Amsterdam, and we would like to invite everyone to set up a Punks for Rojava night in your locale area. It could be a pub night at your local bar, a punk gig, or even a punk compilation. Currently, we are already ordering T-shirts and stickers for additional donations.
As punks and anarchists, we stand firm against war, nationalism and religious fundamentalism; against enslavement of women, arms trafficking, and in mutual solidarity and support of our comrades’ direct democratic project.
