“In the early morning hours of May 22nd, 2009, a man on a bicycle rides through the dark streets of downtown Santiago. In his backpack he is carrying a bomb. In his belt, he has a Smith and Wesson 38 caliber revolver.” That is how the documentary film “Montaje: Caso bombas”, (The Set-up of the Bomb Case) starts with an off camera voice-over upon images of a man pedaling through the nighttime streets of the capital of Chile. Sunday March 23rd 2014, Movie night, Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema by Jeffrey Babcock: The Ascent (Восхождение, Voskhozhdeniye). Directed by Larisa Shepitko, 1977, 109 minutes, in Russian with English subtitles. Door opens at 8pm, film begins at 9pm.

Larisa Shepitko was a Female Ukrainian director who went to school and made films in Russia, but died tragically in a car accident after making just a couple films. She was part of a wave of visionary new film directors at the time which included Andrei Tarkovsky, and she was the wife of the director Elem Klimov (Come ans See). This was her last film, and her crowning achievement.

This film takes place in 1942 in the snow covered landscape of the Belarus, as two young Russian soldiers attempt to find food while evading the German occupation. But this is no thriller in the Hollywood sense, and instead centers on what happens when they are caught… […Lees verder]

The DIY stencil workshop in Joe’s Garage provides you tutorials, knowledge, tools, and materials to make your own stencil(s).
Learn how to use different materials and cutting tools, to perform several strategies of stenciling, and to design images on the computer with the graphic programm GIMP.
You have the chance to create multiple layer stencils or big sized stencils as well as to use your own or already finished stencil(s) in varied ways – like making patches, printing, spraying, etc.
The workshop is open for beginners, and advanced and skilled stencilists who want to work on their projects.

Friends in Need Fund benefit

Friendship solidarity in practise: a low profile fund to support friends in need. Need because they have to pay a lot of money for their Dutch citizenship. Need because they are in a shitty situation and medical costs are rising. Need because they’ve had a really tough time and you want to give them a small gesture of support. There is so many ways our friends can be in need..! This is still being set up and not yet in function – but the general idea is that friends can apply for a friend in need – the Friends in Need Fund will contribute a share to collections that these friends are organizing. Sunday 16th March 2014, Movie Night: Eenhorn Filmavond presents Cidade de Deus (City of God), by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund (2002, 130 minutes), Portuguese language with English subtitles. Door opens at 8pm, film begins at 9pm.

Set in the notorious favela of Rio de Janeiro, this exuberant tale recounts the coming of age story of two very different characters – Rocket who dreams of being a photographer but is constrained by the slum and Li’l Zé who sees an opportunity in drug trafficking.  Their story is intertwined with a set of other characters: amateur criminals, Li’l Zé’s partner who wants better life than crime, a man looking out for revenge and finally Li’l Zé’s rival dealer – amongst many others.  But City of God is much more than a set of tales, it is the story of an entire community filled to the brim with life and energy, even though it is burdened with hardship.

Soweto, together with an enthusiastic group of people, is realising a new political social center, work space and collective housing on the Pieter Nieuwlandstraat in the Dapperbuurt, Amsterdam. Be part of this DIY subsidy free project and help launch this inspiring new housing initiative.  We need to raise money to get this project off the ground- offering an alternative to mortgages,  long waiting lists, and unaffordable rents. Instead we will be sharing skills, ideas, knowledge, labour and wealth. The start of the career of Herman Brood, who lived his life filled with sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. The film is partially filmed in squats. Junky and cult figure, Herman Brood committed suicide in July 2001.
Herman Brood probably never outgrew his petty native Groningen bars scene, hadn’t publican Koos van Dijk neglected his pub and wife to become Brood’s devoted manager, even supplying drugs. They form a band, Brood and his Wild Romance, mainly more junk punks, but gradually build a reputation and after replacing the loser musicians launch a record, largely financed by Koos’s conservative pa.
