Benefit Voku for L’Auberge des Migrants, Calais

Thursday 4 April 2024, Benefit Voku for L’Auberge des Migrants, Calais. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

We are a crew of former members of “Foodbank Maastricht”, where food is regularly rescued from being thrown away, redistributed, and transformed into vegan three-course meals. Foodbank saves hundreds of kilos of food weekly and feeds hundreds in Maastricht.
On this Thursday, we are cooking a wonderful three-course vegan meal from rescued ingredients in Joe’s Garage, raising money for “L’Auberge des Migrants” in Calais, northern France. “L’Auberge des Migrants” is a network of employees and volunteers that provides support for people in exile on the France-UK border. Since 2008, they have been active in the region, providing direct material aid, support and advocacy to everyone who needs it.
In one of their main projects called “Woodyard”, volunteers distribute up to 10 tons of wood a week to people in camps, meeting essential winter needs. Their main focus lies on working in solidarity and questioning the dynamics of oppression and humanitarian governance, offering autonomy to volunteers to better respond to the difficulties of living conditions on the border. Through their actions, “L’Auberge des Migrants” fights to promote a dignified, unconditional and appropriate hospitality for all. […Lees verder]

Benefit Voku: Calais Squats fundraiser

Monday 11 April 2022, Benefit Voku: Calais Squats fundraiser. Volkseten Vegazulu. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

Earlier this year, activist groups from several countries planned a squatting action in Calais, France. The action was intended to create safe, autonomous housing for people on the move who suffer regular and extreme state violence and repression. Two buildings were squatted under intense police scrutiny. One squat, a tower block of flats, was evicted, with involvement from high-level governmental officials such as Gérald Darmanin. The eviction was carried out by RAID, the tactical police often responsible for anti-terrorist actions, who arrived on a helicopter.

Dozens of people on the move currently live autonomously in the other squat, the ‘ghost house’ mansion on Rue Frédéric Sauvage. This squat has survived continuing attempts by the state to proceed to an eviction. The money raised from this people’s kitchen will go towards the maintenance of this squat and future squatting actions by the activist housing group in Calais.

Volkseten Vegazulu is a people’s kitchens existing since the very beginning of Joe’s Garage, June 2005. Your donations are welcome. Food is vegan, no reservation. All benefits go to social & political struggles. Joe’s Garage is a space run by volunteers. Without a collective effort, without your active participation, we’re remaining closed. Get in touch in you feel like giving a hand. We’re always looking for cooks. Any help is welcome in the kitchen. Experience not required. If you want to know which days are still available, mail us.

Calais Migrant Solidarity benefit, Call for international solidarity and action, info night about the situation in Calais

Monday February 10th 2014, Calais Migrant Solidarity benefit, Call for international solidarity and action, info night about the situation in Calais, Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm.

In Calais, hundreds of migrants are facing a collective punishment, a daily harassment and humiliation from the French state. They are regularly counted, photographed, id checked or taken away to the foreign police and detention centres. Riot and border police are constantly patrolling a city in decay. One building on ten would be empty. The racist Calais mayor has been inciting fear amongst the local population and launched an appeal asking residents to inform on migrant shelters and activists. Cops evicted almost every single squatted building. Tensions run high when refugees have nowhere to sleep except in park bushes, under bridges or in overcrowded squats that are constantly under threat. Migrants are living off one meal a day and are carrying everything they own, while spending days and nights at the hands of cops who chase them around the city and mafia who exploit and steal everything they have.
