Solidarity VoKu for Memoria Mediterranea

Thursday September 12, 2024, Solidarity VoKu for Memoria Mediterranea. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

“We are researchers, anthropologists, layers, psychologists, sociologists, mediators, and activists moving in the Mediterranean area to critically analyze the borders that limit it, the migration processes that run through it and the policies that regulate them.
In total adherence to the pleas of the families of those missing or killed attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea routes-particularly Tunisian and sub-Saharan mothers and sisters-we want to promote the defense of the fundamental rights of exiled people, their families and communities, promoting, in particular, the right to know, as well as advocating for initiatives in favor of the right to freedom of movement.
The Mediterranean is the space where we are radicatə, particularly in Sicily, Sardinia and Tunisia, places where we operate on a voluntary basis, based on our knowledge of legal, psycho-social, research and reporting.

We believe in building a collective and active memory that is a practice of countering discrimination, racism and structural injustice, as well as a means of narrating-from the voices of those living on the borders-what is happening in the Mediterranean”.

Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Nov Lituania

Sunday September 8, 2024, Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Nov Lituania * 98 minutes * In Lithuanian with English subtitles, doors open at 20:00 * intro & film start at 20:30.

This is a pretty unusual film for when it was made, and actually it’s a pretty unusual movie to be made in America at any time. It presents us with a situation that we are increasingly becoming familiar with – lack of housing, food prices rising like crazy, and not being able to afford anymore to live in big cities. The story takes place in the 1930s during the great depression, a time when the bankers went too far with their wheeling, dealing and money grubbing, causing a disaster.

Our main characters are a couple who have no place to live anymore but are offered a worthless piece of land in the countryside. Their idea is to create their own Eden, but when faced with difficulties they realize that they are city people and have no idea how to do things like farming. The solution to the problem is by inviting other unemployed people to join them, and thereby creating a cooperative.

A film about collectivism and community and alternative societies, I think we are sadly missing these days. It’s been called an anti-cynical film and no matter what you think of it, its enthusiasm whips up a semi-socialist alternative that includes exchange of labor, sharing food, bartering and solidarity. All of this is presented as an alternative to the dog eat dog capitalism and monopolization that was tearing apart the country. Some viewers have even aptly compared it to the early Russian-Ukrainian movies Alexander Dovzhenko.

Film night at Joe’s Garage, cozy cinema! Free entrance. You want to screen a movie, let us know: joe [at] lists [dot] squat [dot] net

Radical Sunday School: How to dress like an anarchist

Sunday September 8, 2024, Radical Sunday School: How to dress like an anarchist. From 18:00 till 20:00.Clothes form a central part of human life. Each day we choose what to wear, to dress the part in the theatre of life. On this stage, every item of clothing is entwined with some meaning. Think of how skirts symbolize femininity, how uniforms represent authority, or how the color black denotes rebellion. Such meanings inevitably regulate the ways we dress.

The world is riddled with dress codes – coded meanings that are oppressive and restrictive in nature. Our choices of clothing are limited in this regard, not really our own. Capitalism regulates, exploits, and reinforces these coded meanings for profit. Exploitative labor practices, furthermore, pervade the fashion industry. Clothes are a thorny question… especially for anarchists.

What are the meanings of our clothes anyway? How are we to dress without reinforcing exploitation? How can we dress in ways as not to be complicit to oppression? What can we do to counteract the power and oppression of clothes? What would be the right strategy to liberate our clothes (and ourselves)? Should we simply stop caring? Opt-out of clothing all together? Or should we embrace and expand our clothing options? Embrace the creativity and self-expression of clothes? How do our clothes fit in(to) the movement? How to dress like an anarchist…?

Come join us for tonight’s session. Come dressed up as you, that is, as you are or otherwise want to be – or pick your most provocative, anarchistic, Marxist, or creative outfit. No garment is off-limit!

THE FASHION POLICE WILL BE BARRED FROM ENTRY.
