Located on the border between Pakistan and China, K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth. For many climbers, it is an even greater prize than Everest, with limited routes, a steeper ascent, and a harder push to its summit. Nicknamed the ‘Savage Mountain,’ K2’s peak juts unprotected into the atmosphere, regularly exposing climbers and porters to life-threatening weather conditions.

Despite being paid at rates far below those received by international expedition leaders, such porters—whether they provide critical supplies to expedition base camps or take on higher-altitude tasks in support of ascending climbers—do some of the most difficult and dangerous work and these efforts make them worthy of recognition as the true heroes of mountaineering.

In K2 AND THE INVISIBLE FOOTMEN, filmmaker Iara Lee and team chronicle the lives of both Pakistani porters and Nepalese sherpas. The film also follows the first official all-Pakistani climbing team, made up of former porters, who successfully summited in 2014, in celebration of K2 60th anniversary. Amid breathtaking scenery, the film depicts the everyday sacrifices of porters and the courage of those indigenous climbers who choose to return to scale K2 in spite of past tragedies. In their striving to perfect their craft, these mountaineers provide a fresh look into the cultures and national traditions of Pakistan, a country typically portrayed in the foreign media as merely a land of conflict and sectarian strife.

Iara Lee, a Brazilian of Korean descent, is an activist, filmmaker, and director of the Cultures of Resistance Network. In 2010, she released a feature-length documentary entitled CULTURES OF RESISTANCE, which explores how creative action contributes to conflict prevention and resolution. As an extension of her commitment to the issues explored in the film, she also founded the Cultures of Resistance Network, an organization that promotes global solidarity, supports efforts to secure peace and social justice, and brings together artists and change-makers from around the world.

Iara has also continued to produce and direct documentary films. She recently released two full-length documentaries that are currently screening at film festivals around the world: K2 AND THE INVISIBLE FOOTMEN, shot in stunning northern Pakistan, highlights the everyday sacrifices of the indigenous porters who make possible the ascent of Pakistan’s tallest mountain. LIFE IS WAITING: Referendum and Resistance in Western Sahara, looks at forty years of Moroccan occupation and the Sahrawi nonviolent struggle for self-determination by a people for whom colonialism has never ended. In 2013, Iara made a short film entitled THE KALASHA AND THE CRESCENT, which chronicles how an indigenous movement in northern Pakistan is responding to the challenges facing their culture. In 2012, she released a documentary called THE SUFFERING GRASSES: when elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers, which examines the Syrian conflict through the humanity of the civilians who have been killed, abused, and displaced to the squalor of refugee camps.

This is probably the most famous film made by Spanish director Luis Buñuel while he lived for several decades as an exile in Mexico. Less surreal than his European films, even almost documentary in its mood, it follows the story of several rough street kids in Mexico’s ghettos. Although the movie can feel visceral, and it indeed shocked audiences with its radical portrayal of street life and poverty, this beautifully crafted film also lyrically transcends its hard-hitting subject matter.

Luis Buñuel’s depiction of life in Mexico’s slums stunned audiences at the Cannes Film Festival in 1951, with Buñuel picking up the Best Director award, and relaunching the filmmaker’s career after a twenty-year hiatus. The film focuses on the story of an unloved teenage boy, Pedro, who fights to turn his life around against the circumstances of extreme poverty. Unflinchingly honest, at times surreal… and ultimately heartbreaking, Los Olividados is an original, game-changing piece of cinema from one of the medium’s true masters. Some of the images in this flick are more haunting than anything Hollywood has had to offer for the last decade. Really.

Iranian Movie Night: Ten (2002)

Ten (10) is a 2002 Iranian film directed by Abbas Kiarostami and starring Mania Akbari. The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. Ten is divided into ten scenes, each of which depict a conversation between an unchanging female driver (played by Mania Akbari) and a variety of passengers as she drives around Tehran. Her passengers include her young son (played by Akbari’s real life son, Amin Maher), her sister, a bride, a prostitute, and a woman on her way to prayer. One of the major plots during the film is the driver’s divorce from her (barely seen) husband, and the conflict that this causes between mother and son.

Many of the cast were untrained as actors, and the film has an improvisatory element. Elements of the characters were based on the actual life of the main actress and her son. The film was recorded on two digital cameras, one attached to each side of a moving car, showing the driver and passenger respectively.The film explores personal social problems arising in Iranian society, particularly the problems of women.

Movie night: Lenny (1974)

Lenny is an American biographical film about the comedian Lenny Bruce. It jumps between various sections of Bruce’s life, including scenes of when he was in his prime and the burned-out, strung-out performer who, in the twilight of his life, used his nightclub act to pour out his personal frustrations. We watch as up-and-coming Bruce courts his “Shiksa goddess”, a stripper named Honey. With family responsibilities, Lenny is encouraged to do a “safe” act, but he cannot do it. Constantly in trouble for flouting obscenity laws, Lenny develops a near-messianic complex which fuels both his comedy genius and his talent for self-destruction. Worn out by a lifetime of tilting at Establishment windmills, Lenny Bruce dies of a morphine overdose in 1966.

Iranian Movie night: Kandahar (2001)

Kandahar (Dari-Persian: قندهار Qandahar) is a 2001 Iranian film directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, set in Afghanistan during the rule of the Taliban. Its original Persian title is Safar-e Ghandehar, which means “Journey to Kandahar”, and it is alternatively known as The Sun Behind the Moon. The film is based on a partly true, partly fictionalized story of a successful Afghan-Canadian, played by Nelofer Pazira, who returns to Afghanistan after receiving a letter from her sister, who was left behind when the family escaped, that she plans on committing suicide on the last solar eclipse of the millennium.

Kandahar was filmed mostly in Iran, including at the Niatak refugee camp, but also secretly in Afghanistan itself. Most people, including Nelofer Pazira, played themselves. The film premiered at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, but did not get much attention at first. After 9/11, however, it was widely shown. Kandahar won Makhmalbaf the Federico Fellini Prize from UNESCO in 2001.

Synopsis: Nafas is a reporter who was born in Afghanistan, but fled with her family to Canada when she was a child. However, her sister wasn’t so lucky; she lost her legs to a land mine while young, and when Nafas and her family left the country, her sister was accidentally left behind. Nafas receives a letter from her sister announcing that she’s decided to commit suicide during the final eclipse before the dawn of the 21st century; desperate to spare her sister’s life, Nafas makes haste to Afghanistan, where she joins a caravan of refugees who, for a variety of reasons, are returning to the war-torn nation. As Nafas searches for her sister, she soon gets a clear and disturbing portrait of the toll the Taliban regime has taken upon its people.

Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Johnny Got His Gun (1971)

Yet another film that is threatened of being remade by Hollywood (that factory of uninspired dreams), taking this wonderful piece of committed art and castrating it into a typical, tired,  uninspired american formula, and therefore ruining yet another cinematic masterpiece for another generation of film goers…!

Considered by many to be the best anti-war film ever made (its been called the holy-grail of 70s anti-war films), this is cinema at its most revelatory – the entire film actually takes place in a single room in which a soldier is dealing with his injuries. Through memories and thoughts we witness the re-construction of his life, mixed with dreams and fantasies.

This film was skillfully directed by Dalton Trumbo, who also wrote the best-selling book this movie is based on. Many big name directors wanted to make this film, but they also wanted to change things in the script. Trumbo wouldn’t give in, so in the end he directed this brilliant film himself… and thankfully for us he did.

Its difficult to think of another film which is as deep and sincere as this gem from the 70s. What can I say about the profound impact of this film? For the cinema of fake sensationalism, of hyper entertainment, this is a movie which moves, through its razor-sharp honesty. Theerfore it certainly blows every film that is playing now downtown in the Pathe away! Starring Timothy Bottoms, the excellent cast also includes Jason Robards and Donald Sutherland (as Christ).

This will be a high-definition screening of this riveting cult classic.

De documentaire „Revolution à mains nus. Le trajectoire d’un peuple. Le Burkina Faso“ gaat over de Burkinese volksoproer van 30 en 31 oktober 2014 onder aanvoering van de Balai Citoyen (de volksbezem) van reggae muzikant Smockey en rapper Sams’K Le Jah. Deze mondde uit in de val van het dictatoriaal regime van Blaise Compaoré, president sinds 30 jaar, en in de mislukking van de militaire coup van generaal Diendere september jongsleden.
We zien de vrouwen, mannen en jongeren die betrokken waren in het verzet en die besloten geen wapens maar creatieve geweldloze acties te voeren. Ze spreken ook over hun hoop en verwachtingen voor een toekomstige samenleving. Hun visie worden aangevuld met de percepties van de Burkinese diaspora en kunstenaars die zoeken naar een universele vorm van expressie om emancipatie te bevorderen.

De film zoekt naar de achtergronden van het verzet, waaronder de levensomstandigheden en de herinneringen van strijd in het recente verleden. Jongeren, mannen, vrouwen zonder wapens zijn opgestaan tegen een dictatoriaal en gemilitariseerd regime. Gister werd generaal Diendere die twee weken geleden de macht greep in Burkina Faso opgepakt in de hoofdstad Ouagadougou.

Filmregisseur Moussa Ouédraogo uit Ouagadougou is een visum geweigerd om de premiere van de documentaire te presenteren. Mede-regisseur Hans-Georg Eberl uit Oostenrijk zal op de premiere aanwezig zijn voor Q&A met publiek.

Burkina-FasoThis is an invitation for the premiere of the documentary “Revolution with Bare Hands” about the resistance of the Burkinian people at the 30th and 31st October 2014 in Burkina Faso which has let to the demise of the dictatorial regime of Blaise Compaoré, who had been in power for almost 30 years and had participated in the assault of president Thomas Sankara.
We hear the voices of the women, men, youth who were involved in the upraising and who have decided not to use weapons but to resist against the dictatorial and militarist regime using creative non-violent actions.
They also talk about their hopes and expectations for a future society. Their views are supplemented with the perceptions of the Burkinian diaspora in Austria and artists who search for a universally understandable forms of expression to foster emancipation.

All Included Amsterdam is a new initiative that fights for freedom of movement and for the right of residence for migrants. In a time when globalization is a fact, migration should be recognized as part of a package deal. It’s All Included. This means: no illegality, no detention for undocumented migrants and no forced evictions.
With the disappearance of national borders, national identity disappears. Everyone becomes global citizen and deserves regardless of origin equal rights and equal opportunities. Therefore also for migrants ‘all included’ rights and obligations.

Movie Night: Buffet Froid (1979)

Whilst well received in France, Bertrand Bliers films are hardly known abroad. Starring Bertrand Bliers own father and the ambitious Gerard Depardieu, Buffet Froid holds the middle between an absurdistic theatre play and a cynical comedy film.
The characters are victimised by their own personalities, leaving unclear wether it is fate or their stubbornness that eventually does them in.
This movie never ceases to surprise you, larded with theatrical dialogue and a fair share of sarcasm. It is one of those little treasures of French 1970s cinema.
