De Lastpost Benefit

Lapost_Nijmegen

Thursday December 19th 2013: De Lastpost Benefit, Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm.

On 12 april 2008 (during the international days of action for squats and autonomous spaces) the old TPG post office (right in between the train and police station) in Nijmegen was squatted. This enormous building -renamed “De Lastpost”- was immediately opened to the public and an exposition hall and free-shop were created the same day. Not much later De Lastpost hosted many initiatives like a DIY culture festival, an art and graffiti space, people’s kitchen, movie and info evenings etc. Pretty soon many people were showing support and found their way to the squat to help building up a thriving autonomous space.

Unfortunately the municipality rather had De Lastpost demolished than allowing this initiative to thrive, and therefor decided to have the building evicted. De Lastpost, in turn, started a court case against this eviction plan, which unfortunately was lost. The building got evicted and demolished, to leave the area empty for another 4 years.

Now, more than 5 years later, the activists have received the bill for the court case: 1360 euro’s. The money that will be raised during tonight’s Voku will be used to help cover these costs. […Lees verder]
