Movie night: Silent Sonata (Janez Burger, 2011)

Silentsonataposter

Sunday December 22nd 2013, Movie night, Silent Sonata (Circus Fantasticus) directed by Janez Burger, 2011, Slovenia, 75 minutes, with English subtitles. Door opens at 20:00, film begins at 21:00

Janez Berger’s Silent Sonata is an elegantly shot slice of magical realism set during wartime in an unnamed Balkan country, that employs the circus as a metaphor for the human spirit. After Stevo’s wife is shot and killed, he prepares to defend his two young children against further marauders. But the incoming invaders turn out to be nothing less than the amazing Circus Fantasticus, which sets up camp nearby and lives up to its name when the performers turn out to have supernatural powers. A film about courage and compassion in the face of harsh reality, Silent Sonata takes the calculated, but entirely successful, risk of telling its story entirely without words, using expressive gestures, glances, and music. De Lastpost Benefit

Lapost_Nijmegen

Thursday December 19th 2013: De Lastpost Benefit, Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm.

On 12 april 2008 (during the international days of action for squats and autonomous spaces) the old TPG post office (right in between the train and police station) in Nijmegen was squatted. This enormous building -renamed “De Lastpost”- was immediately opened to the public and an exposition hall and free-shop were created the same day. Not much later De Lastpost hosted many initiatives like a DIY culture festival, an art and graffiti space, people’s kitchen, movie and info evenings etc. Pretty soon many people were showing support and found their way to the squat to help building up a thriving autonomous space.

Unfortunately the municipality rather had De Lastpost demolished than allowing this initiative to thrive, and therefor decided to have the building evicted. De Lastpost, in turn, started a court case against this eviction plan, which unfortunately was lost. The building got evicted and demolished, to leave the area empty for another 4 years.

Now, more than 5 years later, the activists have received the bill for the court case: 1360 euro’s. The money that will be raised during tonight’s Voku will be used to help cover these costs. […Lees verder]

Last august/september a climate action camp against lignight mining took place in the German area Rhineland, near to Cologne – where energy giant RWE (Rheinisch-Westfälisches Elektrizitätswerk AG)caries out immense coal mining operations – replacing hectares of urban and natural environment (life) for 3 devastating big dirty, dead black gaps in the ground (the biggest holes of Europe dug by mankind) and keeps ongoing with daily destructive polluting activity.

Primary forest (see: hambachforest.blogsport.de), entire villages and agricultural land are being destroyed to dig the mine, besides this lignite is the dirtiest type of coal: the coal burners in Rhineland are annually responsible for over 100million of CO2 emissions. […Lees verder]
