Book presentation: “Squats & Pirates, chronicles of occupations in Barcelona and elsewhere”

Sunday November 24, 2024, Book presentation: “Squats & Pirates, chronicles of occupations in Barcelona and elsewhere” published by Seitan con Bravas. Doors open from 8 p.m., with food, then discussion in French, Spanish, English. The whole thing will be translated into English.

We met with Trash, the author of the book “Squats & Pirates, chronicles of occupations in Barcelona and elsewhere” published by Seitan con Bravas. This book presentation tour is a marathon through France and Belgium with a small detour to Amsterdam, we appreciate.
Published this summer in complete discretion, the Squats & Pirates book brings together some forty articles and interviews recounting illegal occupations of empty buildings. From Barcelona to London, from the Canary Islands to Dublin, from Brest to Saint-Etienne via Lyon, Marseille or Amsterdam, we read anecdotes, advice, memories and other comments from people who have all been, for two weeks or for life, “occupants without rights or titles”. A great reminder that other ways of living exist, and that in a country like France, where millions of vacant homes are listed every year, they are more legitimate than ever.
Published by a publishing house created for the occasion, “Seitan Con Bravas”, Squats & Pirates is 420 pages without barcodes, ISBNs, distributors, or real names of authors. The book can be ordered by email, directly from the publisher, unless you come across it in one of the places that had the good idea to store a few copies.
“All these squat adventures, as dramatic, individualistic and hardcore as they may have been, are above all strong human stories; absurd, intense and violent at times, but often beautiful. I obviously don’t include cops and bailiffs in this story because with all due respect to the hippies we kiss hard, two legs and two arms don’t necessarily make us human beings. As long as there are developers, there will be squatters and as long as there are squatters there will be hope. Big up to all those who don’t give up. »

Benefit voku for Palestinian Family Khaled & Bassam, by ZZW Rafelrand

Monday September 16, 2024, Benefit voku for Palestinian Family Khaled & Bassam, by ZZW Rafelrand + let’s talk about DIY projects (theme: unrelated). Food served from 7pm, no reservation!

THE BENEFIT OF THIS EVENT HAS CHANGED: DONATIONS GO TO PALESTINIAN FAMILY KHALED & BASSAM

Khaled and Bassam and their parents, Ali and Heba, live in northern Gaza. Since October 7th, they have been displaced more than 13 times from their home due to the continues bombing of people’s homes in Gaza. Even the so proclaimed ‘safe’ areas where they fled to have been bombed, leaving nothing left and everything distroyed. Last Tuesday night, the street in front of their shelter was bombed. Ali’s brother was killed. Through a friend who is in contact with them, we hear the most horrified stories come through every week. The family of Khaled and Bassam is just one of many Palestinians who are being displaced, under threat and being killed by the Israeli genocide regime.

The benefit is held by ZZW Rafelrand, a patchwork of communities living and creating in one of the last frayed edges of Amsterdam East, on Zeeburgereiland. Excisting since over 40 years, the whole neighborhood is scheduled for demolition in December 2024. The community neighborhood – ZZW, artist ateliers, Fort Knox, One Peaceful World, Cruise In, etc – will be fully demolished for a new neigborhood.

Since September 2023, we – a small team of DIY film enthusiasts – started following the story of the neighhborhood to create a DIY documentary film. We combine everyday life with community activism: solidarity networks & events, a symbolic funeral, endless negotiations with the municipality, a summer free for all festival, etc. But we also create funky scenes to show the creativity residing in the neighborhood and to show its funky spirit. We would love to take you along this journey and start talking about DIY projects!

Join the VoKu for a delicious meal, a chat, and join to help Khalled & Bassam into safety!

Benefit voku for Disgraça in Lisbon

Monday August 26, 2024, Benefit voku for Disgraça in Lisbon. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

News from Disgraça, Lisbon https://disgraca.com/ : as you may have heard, after 9 years of horizontal, autonomous, anti-authoritarian mischief, we’re making an effort to buy Disgraça!
It all started on 11 September 2015. Atop one of Lisbon’s hills, the doors of Disgraça opened in a former school. From the vapid white walls, from the empty, echoing rooms, from the multitude of wills that converged in that place, this restless project blossomed. Walls fell, walls rose, walls were scribbled on. And as if it were a spring of insubordination from the depths of the city’s subsoil, we materialised, room by room, each one’s community potential. Moved by common dreams, desires and needs, we built a canteen and community space, a library, a DIY concert hall, a workshop where chaos reigns, a rehearsal room and a screen printing room, a gym (the tidiest place in the building), the free shop Desumana, and, from the memory of an empty shop front, a cosy anarchist bookshop – Tortuga.

Voku benefit Woningsdag w/ live music: Lyngfarer and Ancient Hostility (anarcho folk)

Monday July 22, 2024, Voku benefit Woningsdag w/ live music: Lyngfarer and Ancient Hostility (anarcho folk). Food served from 7pm, no reservation. Music from 8pm.

The benefit money will go to the costs of Woningsdag, every year while the country celebrates Koningsdag we celebrate Woningsdag because the urgency to get everyone housing is more important than Monarchy. Last Woningsdag, on April 27, 2024, a building got squatted in the city center (Gravenstraat 26-28). We still have some unpaid costs and that’s why we have a benefit.

There will be live music performance as well with Lyngfarer and Ancient Hostility, the anarcho folk night from Joe’s this summer:
Lyngfarer https://lyngfarer.bandcamp.com/
“Lyngfarer is the quiet and pensive stuff that Magnus Nymo from Norway writes. It lives in the fog between medieval lore and anarchist dbeat classics but is quiet enough to be a lullaby. Magnus started performing as Lyngfarer in 2015 and has since then hung out and toured around Europe, Scandinavia, Ireland and the US and UK.”
Ancient Hostility (anarcho folk): “Harmony singing and drones from members of All In Vain and Dawn Ray’d, singing songs about heartbreak and resistance.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g27Bhsxzrvc […Lees verder]

This evening we are raising funds to pay for our legal defense. Come to support!
Gravenstraat 26-28 had been rotting away for a decade. There was a first attempt to squat the houses on September 12, 2021, during the Woonprotest. 61 people were arrested and police brutality followed this squatting action.
On April 27, 2024, on Housing Day (Woningsdag), Gravenstraat 26-28 is successfully squatted. Within a few days, the front gets some fresh paint and the house is named De Drie Duyfjes. Life is back in the house. Come support your local squatters!

Presentation and discussion on the book Casa Encantada, portrait of the struggle for housing in Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Saturday 11 May 2024, 20:00, presentation and discussion on the book Casa Encantada, portrait of the struggle for housing in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

The book “Casa Encantada (Enchanted House) – Portrait of the struggle for housing in Belo Horizonte during the pandemic” presents illustrations, photographs, and interviews with squatters from Belo Horizonte in 2022 and 2023. Two Brazilian organizers and squatters document nearly 20 abandoned houses in the center of the state of Minas Gerais that have been transformed into social and cultural spaces for people who were homeless and particularly vulnerable during the pandemic.

During the discussion, the comrades from the Kasa Invisível squat will delve into the contexts of the squatting movement and the struggle for land and living spaces in Belo Horizonte. The city is home to at least 100,000 people living in squatted buildings, houses, or territories and hosts one of the largest land conflicts in Latin America. The discussion aims to foster international connections and solidarity.
