Benefit for Dyke Dungeon legal fees

Thursday January 23, 2025, Benefit for Dyke Dungeon legal fees. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

This voku is a benefit for the legal fees of the Dyke Dungeon. Dyke Dungeon was a squatted house in the Johannes Verhulststraat (Amsterdam Oud-Zuid) that was home to a group of dykes, dyke supporters and dyke lovers, as well as a little family of mice. After 3 months of building walls, tending to the garden and fulfilling their cottagecore interior design dreams, the residents had some cops come by who brought the shittiest christmas gift of them all: an eviction letter. Confused, pissed, sad and ready to put up a fight, they got to work on their defense. Unfortunately, they lost their court case the week after and eventually got evicted on January 6th, destroying all the love that got put into building up the house, leaving multiple without a home and little more than a truckload of building material and legal fees to pay.
Come eat with us at Joe’s on January 23rd to help pay our legal costs and reminisce the happy days we spent in our dungeon 🏚 […Lees verder]

Benefit Voku for Takland Vrijstraat

Monday January 6, 2025, Benefit VoKu for Takland Vrijstraat. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

Takland is a squatted house and social center that’s been running since Kingsday 2023, when we declared ourselves independent from the Dutch state. For the past months we’ve been hosting a weekly jazz bar with different musicians opening and a jam session after. Running the space, getting all the equipment and also maintaining the house costs a lot of money and energy. So come by for some great food and to support another social center so that we can also host benefits again.

Screening “De Zinkende Rafelrand”

Sunday December 29, 2024, Screening “De Zinkende Rafelrand”, a film by Mirte Jepma (2024), 56 minutes, in Dutch with English subtitles. Screening and discussion with Mirte Jepma and Marijn van der Eyden. Doors open at 20.00, film starts at 20.30.

“The Sinking Fringe” is a documentary about the untamed Baaibuurt neighborhood in Amsterdam East that is bound to disappear on 31 December 2024. This neighborhood, a rich tapestry of free-spirited, tight-knit communities, will be ‘developed’ to remedy the housing crisis. This urban renewal plan requires raising the soil in the Baaibuurt-West by 7 meters of sand in order to prepare the sinking land for conventional urban housing. Hence, it is referred to as the Sinking Fringe. This film captures the stories, faces, and places of a neighborhood in danger of disappearing under the sand. The film combines interviews with archive footage to create an intimate portrait of a hidden neighborhood full of energy and fear but also hope for the future of the city of Amsterdam in which they, too, have a place. The Sinking Fringe is a call for action; what do we want our future cities to look like? For whom are we building? We hope this film can spark a debate on the values we aim to nurture in our cities.

Benefit No Border Kitchen and Announcement Documentary Screening by ZZW & friends

Monday December 16, 2024, Benefit No Border Kitchen and announcement documentary screening by ZZW & friends. Food served from 7pm, no reservation!

This Voku was initiated as a supporting event for the Sunday screening of the documentary “De Zinkende Rafelrand” by Mirte Jepma, Alberto Morbelli, Benjamin Vanderveen, and Marijn van der Eyden, which will be shown at Joe’s on Sunday December the 29th. The film deals with the pending eviction of the Neighborhood “Baaibuurt West” in Amsterdam, an undefined space that has naturally grown and developed over the past 40 years and is home to several individual communities, big and small, many plant and animal species, and plenty of free birds. The purpose of the Voku is to get together, have some good food, and possibly tell some stories about our part of this city which we’ll have to leave behind on December 31st. All profits will be donated to No Border Kitchen.

Solidarity Voku for squatted Prosfygika in Athens

Thursday November 28, 2024, Solidarity Voku for squatted Prosfygika in Athens. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

Fundraiser for the community of squatted Prosfygika in Athens
The Community – The building complex of Prosfygika was built in 1933 to accommodate refugees from Asia Minor. Thus, in these circumstances, a lively neighbourhood with community characteristics was established, consisting mostly of working class people. In 1944, the anti-fascist partisans used Prosfygika as a shelter against the Greek and British state army; the bullet marks can be seen on the facades of the buildings to this day, as well as the guerrilla monument which has been erected on the front of Prosfygika and reminds us daily of the history of the place. Today, it is one of the largest building complexes in the centre of Athens, which has not yet accepted the gentrification and exploitation that comes from big capital and the state apparatus. It is a place of strategic importance since it is located between two pillars of power – on one side the Supreme Court and on the other the General Police Directorate of Attica.

Book presentation: “Squats & Pirates, chronicles of occupations in Barcelona and elsewhere”

Sunday November 24, 2024, Book presentation: “Squats & Pirates, chronicles of occupations in Barcelona and elsewhere”. Doors open from 8 p.m., with food & cakes.

We met with Trash, the author of the book published by Seitan con Bravas. The Squats & Pirates book brings together some forty articles and interviews recounting illegal occupations of empty buildings. From Barcelona to London, from the Canary Islands to Dublin, from Brest to Saint-Etienne via Lyon, Marseille or Amsterdam, we read anecdotes, advice, memories and other comments from people who have all been, for two weeks or for life, “occupants without rights or titles”. A great reminder that other ways of living exist, and that in a country like France, where millions of vacant homes are listed every year, they are more legitimate than ever. “All these squat adventures, as dramatic, individualistic and hardcore as they may have been, are above all strong human stories; absurd, intense and violent at times, but often beautiful. As long as there are developers, there will be squatters and as long as there are squatters there will be hope. Big up to all those who don’t give up.”

Benefit voku for Palestinian Family Khaled & Bassam, by ZZW Rafelrand

Monday September 16, 2024, Benefit voku for Palestinian Family Khaled & Bassam, by ZZW Rafelrand + let’s talk about DIY projects (theme: unrelated). Food served from 7pm, no reservation!

THE BENEFIT OF THIS EVENT HAS CHANGED: DONATIONS GO TO PALESTINIAN FAMILY KHALED & BASSAM

Khaled and Bassam and their parents, Ali and Heba, live in northern Gaza. Since October 7th, they have been displaced more than 13 times from their home due to the continues bombing of people’s homes in Gaza. Even the so proclaimed ‘safe’ areas where they fled to have been bombed, leaving nothing left and everything distroyed. Last Tuesday night, the street in front of their shelter was bombed. Ali’s brother was killed. Through a friend who is in contact with them, we hear the most horrified stories come through every week. The family of Khaled and Bassam is just one of many Palestinians who are being displaced, under threat and being killed by the Israeli genocide regime.

The benefit is held by ZZW Rafelrand, a patchwork of communities living and creating in one of the last frayed edges of Amsterdam East, on Zeeburgereiland. Excisting since over 40 years, the whole neighborhood is scheduled for demolition in December 2024. The community neighborhood – ZZW, artist ateliers, Fort Knox, One Peaceful World, Cruise In, etc – will be fully demolished for a new neigborhood.

Since September 2023, we – a small team of DIY film enthusiasts – started following the story of the neighhborhood to create a DIY documentary film. We combine everyday life with community activism: solidarity networks & events, a symbolic funeral, endless negotiations with the municipality, a summer free for all festival, etc. But we also create funky scenes to show the creativity residing in the neighborhood and to show its funky spirit. We would love to take you along this journey and start talking about DIY projects!

Join the VoKu for a delicious meal, a chat, and join to help Khalled & Bassam into safety!
