Benefit for Popular Assembly of Lavapiés in Madrid

20150423_Benefit_for_Popular_Assembly_of_Lavapies_in_MadridThursday April 23rd 2015, Benefit for Popular Assembly of Lavapiés in Madrid. Concert with Almudena and Davide. Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm

When the boroughs are self-organized, the State answers with punishment

“No, they won’t stop us”

In our neighborhood, Lavapiés (Madrid), there is always an helicopter surveying the area. It is part of the state of fear and shock they try to impose. They arrest us, they issue fines against us, they search for us in our homes, they put us in jail…but that will not stop us, because our solidarity is strong and for real.

We are facing an increase in the repression from the Spanish government as it was in the Eighties. Activists from different movements are locked up daily (anarchist, members of independantist movements, feminists, communists, housing activists, squatters  …) Nothing new, what else is to expect from the government? Even if that has always been the case, it is true that there has been an increase of the repression. This is partially explained because there is a certain fear from the power of these seeds of self-organization coming from the neighborhoods. These activist movements are steadily increasing and stopping evictions, producing in different ways, creating solidarity networks, transforming plots into kitchen gardens, trying to find and experiment ways of getting away step by step from the usual commercial networks…and that is scary for the power. The power reacts  wickedly against movements, against this solidarity among the oppressed. […Lees verder]

Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Kes (1969)

150419 Kes smSunday April 19th 2015, Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Kes (1969). Directed by Ken Loach, 111 minutes. In English with English subtitles. Free admission. Door opens at 20:00, Film starts at 21:00.

This is an early film directed by Ken Loach, and it is a poetically beautiful portrait of a 14-year-old boy growing up in the northern working-class Yorkshire area of England. It is photographed in an austere, almost documentary style. The non-actor David Bradley is stunningly as the young boy Billy, whose dreary future seems to be pretty much destined for the local coal mines. One day his life suddenly resonates when he discovers a small kestrel falcon, which he trains daily. This is a film about being suffocated by your environment, and the deep longing for something else.

Whereas the Hollywood approach to life is to escape through entertainment, European cinema (and Kes is a wonderful example) instead zeros in on aspects of our lives and asks us to pause and think about them. In Kes, this is done through sublime acting and a profound ability to capture a mood. There is so much trash in the cinemas today, why not try out something that may pierce your heart and change your idea of cinema forever? This movie is still etched deeply in my memory after I saw it last 35 years ago.. it’s one of the most moving films of all time, and it achieves this without any cheap sentimentality.

For many people it is the best film ever made. And it was also voted by the British Film Institute as being one of the 10 best British films of the last century. This will be a high-definition screening. […Lees verder]

Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Campaign Benefit

berliner-mauer-graffiti_free_mumia_abu_jamalThursday April 16th 2015, Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Campaign Benefit, Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm

The life of brilliant journalist, intellectual, revolutionary, and political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal is in great danger. Pennsylvania set two execution dates for Mumia in the ’90’s despite his innocence. Only the international movement stayed the hands of the executioner. Now removed from Death Row, Mumia is once again subject to attempted execution, this time through medical neglect and malpractice. With no history of diabetes, and subsequent to having three blood tests only weeks earlier, on March 30, Mumia went into diabetic shock. He was hospitalized on Monday, March 30, with life-threatening high blood sugar, but two days later was transferred back to the same prison that failed to diagnose or treat him even though he was still very ill. His diet is dangerous and his health is deteriorating. Once again, only massive pressure will prevent his death. http://www.freemumia.com/ […Lees verder]

20150413_Seed_Bomb_Making_WorkshopMonday April 13th 2015, Seed Bomb Making Workshop and Seed Swap Table. From 6 till 7pm.

After the successful Green Ass Garden Working Weekend at ADM in March, it is time for some gardening activity in the Transvaalbuurt. With a people’s kitchen running twice a week, Joe’s Garage has quite a big compost waiting for your hands. You know a garden, an empty lot to decorate. We have quite some seeds meant for such a workshop. Maybe you want to plant some invasive flowers, some gigantic pumpkins at your house owner. Seed bombs are the perfect way to plant seeds in locations where you do not necessarily have access, where you do not own the property. Have a break spraying slogans on the walls. The city is full of spaces in need of a new decoration in the ground. Bring your morning glory and sun flower seeds. We provide the clay, the compost and various seeds. For you own garden, lots of seeds will be waiting for you on the Seed Swap table. From 6 till 7pm,  and directly followed by the people’s kitchen.

Iranian Movie night: Women Without Men (2009)

Women_Without_MenSunday April 12th 2015, Iranian Movie night: Women Without Men by Shirin Neshat (2009, 95 minutes). In Persian with English subtitles. Door opens at 8pm, film begins at 9pm. Free admission.

Neshat offers an exquisitely crafted view of women rights today in Iran as compared to Iran in 1953, when a British- and American-backed coup removed the democratically elected government. The Women Without Men movie was adapted from the novel by Iranian author Shahrnush Parsipur, the film weaves together the stories of four individual women during that time, whose experiences are shaped by their faith and the social structures in place. The film grants audiences the opportunity to explore the lives of four women and the beautiful countryside of Iran, where Neshat explores the social, political, and psychological dimensions of her characters as they meet in a metaphorical garden, where they can exist and reflect while the complex intellectual and religious forces shaping their world linger in the air around them.
