Screw the Smalltalk VOKU for No Border Kitchen Lesvos

Monday 8 January 2024, Screw the Smalltalk VOKU for No Border Kitchen Lesvos. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

Our friends at No Border Kitchen Lesvos need our support! With cold weather, ever-continuing pushbacks and little support, we need to stand in solidarity more than ever.

“No Border Kitchen Lesvos is a self-organised group of independent individuals who maintain a solidarity structure on the Greek Island of Lesvos. The main purpose of the collective is to support travellers who cannot progress with their journey due to European migratory policies. Through a praxis based on mutual aid and solidarity, we take a stand against border policies and the suffering they are causing.

Alongside providing basic needs, we are trying to offer a viable alternative to the way travellers are treated by mainstream NGO’s, governments, and local authorities, which is often characterised by condescension, coupled with a dehumanising and infantilising attitude. We also monitor and publish information about the ever-changing situation on Lesvos, to put the situation back into focus and to be able to maintain a flexible and responsive organisational structure.”

Alongside serving food, we will also play a game called screw the smalltalk, in which we doodle together. Bring a pen and paper if you want to participate!

Aman molli: Rebetiko music workshop with Eirini Zogali

Friday 27 October 2023, Aman molli: Rebetiko music workshop with Eirini Zogali, from 19:00 to 23:30

Born in Corinth, Greece Eirini Zogali started her music studies in the age of 7 with classical guitar. In 2009 she got accepted in the local music school where she took an interest for the first time in Greek traditional music and in tampoura, a three string instrument with great music history. From tampoura she transitioned to the Greek bouzouki (also three strings) in the age of 15 and coordinated with it deeply. In 2015 she started her bachelor studies with specialization in the bouzouki at the Department of music science and art in Thessaloniki. During her studies there she experienced different styles of Greek, Balkan and Turkish music, with bouzouki as a tool of translation. With the guide of her teachers she learned how to come in touch with the essence of the instrument, which was created by constant experimentation and change in the techniques and the tunings, and that’s how she likes to represent it. After her graduation she got accepted to the Master programme of Codarts, Rotterdam where she studies the percussive side of the oud (an instrument also of great importance to her) and its possibilities, while at the same time she is teaching the bouzouki with students from all over the world.

This workshop will be an in depth presentation of the rebetiko, through its history and of course its repertoire. In this workshop, there will be a discussion and analysis based on the compositions that will be learned, and of course a lot of playing. The workshop is open to every level and every type of musician (vocalist, instrumentalist). The workshop will start at 7pm and last until 9pm. After the workshop, there will be a jam session.

Justice for Kostas Manioudakis. Rebetiko night, voku and concert with Rebet GuitarS

Monday 23 October 2023, Justice for Kostas Manioudakis. Rebetiko night, voku and concert with Rebet GuitarS. Food served from 7pm, music from 9pm, no reservation.

On Friday, September 1st, 2023, 58-year-old Kostas Manioudakis was murdered by cops on a rural road in Crete after being beaten up, for a small amount of cannabis, which has not been yet confirmed. The cops in their statements claimed that he died suddenly from heart attack during police check, which is non-existent and is proven both by the testimonies of passers-by and by the obvious signs of beating. The purpose of the rebetiko night is to financially support the family of Kostas in the difficult struggle it has to fight for justice.

On the stage after the food, Rebet GuitarS (Jaap Faber and Charis Konstantinou), a guitar duo: https://joesgarage.nl/archives/tag/rebet-guitar
Rebetiko, the music crossroad between middle east and west from the early 1900’s. Songs about love, joy and sorrow. A musical sub-culture, a music of the lower classes.
“The womb of rebetiko was the jail and the hash den. It was there that the early rebetes created their songs. They sang in quiet, harsh voices, unforced, one after the other, each singer adding a verse which often bore no relation to the previous verse, and a song often went on for hours. There was no refrain, and the melody was simple and easy.” Ilias Petropoulos. […Lees verder]

Benefit Voku in solidarity with the squatted neighbourhood of Prosfygika

Monday 17 July 2023, Benefit Voku in solidarity with the squatted neighbourhood of Prosfygika. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

“Prosfygika”, or otherwise refugee homes, is a complex of residential flats built in 1930’s to house refugees resulting from the Asia Minor conflict between Greece and Turkey. The buildings are situated on a central avenue of Athens, surrounded on either side by the police HQ and the supreme court, in a heavily gentrified area . After years of abandonment, Prosfygika has been increasingly reclaiming its original purpose as many refugees, migrants, poor, greek and foreigner working class people have sought to resolve their need for housing by squatting the empty flats.

Friday June 2nd 2023, Aman molli concert with Primi Secondi. The doors will open at 8pm, and music will start at 9 pm. Donations welcome.

Primi Secondi are an ensemble of immigrants and students located in South Holland. Inspired by the evident similarities of Rotterdam with the maritime and multicultural background of early 20th century Piraeus, they attempt a strictly amateur interpretation of inter-war Rebetiko and post-war Greek Folk compositions.

Orestis Strymponis: vocals
Chris Toitos: bouzouki
Kostas Patsis: bouzouki, vocals
George Germanos: guitar
Vangelis Christantonis: baglamas, vocals

Aman Molli is an open collective workshop for modal music, broadly defined as music following melodic pathways that are outside the two standardized Western scales and associated harmonies. Instruments and Music Styles Any kind of acoustic instrument (Strings, percussions, wind, voice). Many of the instruments used today (guitars, bouzoukia etc.) have even-tempered tuning so the maqams/dromoi are not the traditional Arabic/Turkish/Persian microtonal versions but the westernized adaptations. One of the objectives is to explore the differences. In the same spirit, we add harmonic structure (in guitars or mpaglama chords etc) where possible. On the rhythm side we explore the various characteristics rhythms of these regions/musical tradition (9/8 etc.).
