Monday December 16, 2024, Benefit No Border Kitchen and announcement documentary screening by ZZW & friends. Food served from 7pm, no reservation!

This Voku was initiated as a supporting event for the Sunday screening of the documentary “De Zinkende Rafelrand” by Mirte Jepma, Alberto Morbelli, Benjamin Vanderveen, and Marijn van der Eyden, which will be shown at Joe’s on Sunday December the 29th. The film deals with the pending eviction of the Neighborhood “Baaibuurt West” in Amsterdam, an undefined space that has naturally grown and developed over the past 40 years and is home to several individual communities, big and small, many plant and animal species, and plenty of free birds. The purpose of the Voku is to get together, have some good food, and possibly tell some stories about our part of this city which we’ll have to leave behind on December 31st. All profits will be donated to No Border Kitchen.

Voku Benefit to help A.casă in Cluj-Napoca

Thursday October 17, 2024, Voku Benefit to help A.casă in Cluj-Napoca by ZZW Rafelrand and friends. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

This is Call-out for support. A.casă social center in Cluj-Napoca (in so called Romania), the place where multiple informal political radical groups organise, needs your help. Since the new location opened in 2020, lots of energy and money were put into making the space safer, comfortable and better fitting the needs of the people using it. Electricity, gas and water installation were replaced and the roof was fixed, besides many other thing.
Now we just realised we need to reinforce the foundation of one 10 meters long wall of the house, otherwise we risk that the wall will continue to crack and maybe even collapse in time.
We need to do all the necessary work and fix this in November. We are reaching out to groups, friends and initiatives abroad which could organise small solievents for A.casă, so that we can raise the amount needed.

Benefit voku for Palestinian Family Khaled & Bassam, by ZZW Rafelrand

THE BENEFIT OF THIS EVENT HAS CHANGED: DONATIONS GO TO PALESTINIAN FAMILY KHALED & BASSAM

Khaled and Bassam and their parents, Ali and Heba, live in northern Gaza. Since October 7th, they have been displaced more than 13 times from their home due to the continues bombing of people’s homes in Gaza. Even the so proclaimed ‘safe’ areas where they fled to have been bombed, leaving nothing left and everything distroyed. Last Tuesday night, the street in front of their shelter was bombed. Ali’s brother was killed. Through a friend who is in contact with them, we hear the most horrified stories come through every week. The family of Khaled and Bassam is just one of many Palestinians who are being displaced, under threat and being killed by the Israeli genocide regime.

The benefit is held by ZZW Rafelrand, a patchwork of communities living and creating in one of the last frayed edges of Amsterdam East, on Zeeburgereiland. Excisting since over 40 years, the whole neighborhood is scheduled for demolition in December 2024. The community neighborhood – ZZW, artist ateliers, Fort Knox, One Peaceful World, Cruise In, etc – will be fully demolished for a new neigborhood.

Since September 2023, we – a small team of DIY film enthusiasts – started following the story of the neighhborhood to create a DIY documentary film. We combine everyday life with community activism: solidarity networks & events, a symbolic funeral, endless negotiations with the municipality, a summer free for all festival, etc. But we also create funky scenes to show the creativity residing in the neighborhood and to show its funky spirit. We would love to take you along this journey and start talking about DIY projects!

Our friends at No Border Kitchen Lesvos need our support! With cold weather, ever-continuing pushbacks and little support, we need to stand in solidarity more than ever.

“No Border Kitchen Lesvos is a self-organised group of independent individuals who maintain a solidarity structure on the Greek Island of Lesvos. The main purpose of the collective is to support travellers who cannot progress with their journey due to European migratory policies. Through a praxis based on mutual aid and solidarity, we take a stand against border policies and the suffering they are causing.

Alongside providing basic needs, we are trying to offer a viable alternative to the way travellers are treated by mainstream NGO’s, governments, and local authorities, which is often characterised by condescension, coupled with a dehumanising and infantilising attitude. We also monitor and publish information about the ever-changing situation on Lesvos, to put the situation back into focus and to be able to maintain a flexible and responsive organisational structure.”

Alongside serving food, we will also play a game called screw the smalltalk, in which we doodle together. Bring a pen and paper if you want to participate!
