Palestine Cinema Days: Resistance, Why? (Christian Ghazi, 1971) and Naila and the Uprising (Julia Bacha, 2017)

Saturday, November 2nd, 2024, Palestine Cinema Days: Resistance, Why? (Christian Ghazi, 1971) and Naila and the Uprising (Julia Bacha, 2017). Doors open at 19:30, free entrance.

Join us for a screening of Palestine Cinema Days in Amsterdam. On the somber anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, observed on November 2nd, and in an effort to amplify Palestinian voices, we are screening Resistance, Why? (Christian Ghazi, 1971) and Naila and the Uprising (Julia Bacha, 2017) at 19:30 p.m. at Joe’s Garage. The screening is free of charge.

Resistance, Why? (56 mins): In 1970, with the initiative of Soraya Antonius (Fifth of June Society), Christian Ghazi and Noureddine Chatti went to meet Arab political figures, and in particular Palestinians living in Lebanon. Ghassan Kanafani, Sadiq Jalal El-Azm, Nabil Shaath, and others offer their visions of the Palestinian revolution, anchoring it in its history since the early 20th century.

Naila and the Uprising (76 minutes): Chronicling the remarkable journey of Naila Ayesh and a fierce community of women at the frontlines, whose stories weave through the most vibrant, nonviolent mobilization in Palestinian history – the First Intifada in the late 1980s.

19:30 Doors open
20:00 Introduction and Resistance, Why?
21:30 Naila and the Uprising

Aman molli: Practice of east Mediterranean Music

Friday November 1st, 2024, Aman molli: Practice of east Mediterranean Music. From 20:00 to 23:30.

This is a weekly open practice session of east Mediterranean music, in which we play genres such as rebetiko and Greek/Balkan/Turkish/Middle Eastern folk music. Together we explore the melodic pathways, rhythms (e.g. 9/8, 7/8. 5/4) and harmonies of, as well as connections between these musical traditions. We gather to have fun playing music together, to share musical knowledge and experience, and improve our skills on our instruments. We welcome interested newcomers to join in, regardless of musical experience, and using any kind of instrument (strings, percussion, wind, voice).

Grasugga solidarity kitchen: Three Dishes inspired on the horrors of Dutch migration policies

Thursday November 31, 2024, Grasugga solidarity kitchen: Three Dishes inspired on the horrors of Dutch migration policies. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

Benefit dinner for two refugee families* We are a new squat in Utrecht since October 5th, st. Gråsugga (Woodlouse), a little chaotic international collective of radical mischief enthusiasts. This VoKu is dedicated to two refugee families (from Burkina Faso and Somalia). We want to aid covering the health expenses after a traffic accident of one of the families. The other family is currently facing financial insecurity as immigration procedures in the Netherlands are ridiculously slow and not very helpful (fuck IND). The Netherlands is pushing increasingly hostile immigration policies systematically disabling people without documents from access to housing, education, healthcare, or labour rights. This is deliberate exploitation forcing people into situations in which they have to accept jobs far below minimum wage without (legal) security or protection. We are collectively responsible for responding to this with radical action and mutual aid alike. We hope to support these families by cooking a delicious dumpsterdived vegan dinner!! It will be halloween themed (as if the Dutch bureaucracy machine wasn’t enough of a scare), come by! […Lees verder]
