Radical Sunday School: How to dress like an anarchist

Sunday September 8, 2024, Radical Sunday School: How to dress like an anarchist. From 18:00 till 20:00.Clothes form a central part of human life. Each day we choose what to wear, to dress the part in the theatre of life. On this stage, every item of clothing is entwined with some meaning. Think of how skirts symbolize femininity, how uniforms represent authority, or how the color black denotes rebellion. Such meanings inevitably regulate the ways we dress.

The world is riddled with dress codes – coded meanings that are oppressive and restrictive in nature. Our choices of clothing are limited in this regard, not really our own. Capitalism regulates, exploits, and reinforces these coded meanings for profit. Exploitative labor practices, furthermore, pervade the fashion industry. Clothes are a thorny question… especially for anarchists.

What are the meanings of our clothes anyway? How are we to dress without reinforcing exploitation? How can we dress in ways as not to be complicit to oppression? What can we do to counteract the power and oppression of clothes? What would be the right strategy to liberate our clothes (and ourselves)? Should we simply stop caring? Opt-out of clothing all together? Or should we embrace and expand our clothing options? Embrace the creativity and self-expression of clothes? How do our clothes fit in(to) the movement? How to dress like an anarchist…?

Come join us for tonight’s session. Come dressed up as you, that is, as you are or otherwise want to be – or pick your most provocative, anarchistic, Marxist, or creative outfit. No garment is off-limit!

THE FASHION POLICE WILL BE BARRED FROM ENTRY.

Friday September 6, 2024, Aman molli: Practice of east Mediterranean Music. From 20:00.

This is a weekly open practice session of east Mediterranean music, in which we play genres such as rebetiko and Greek/Balkan/Turkish/Middle Eastern folk music. Together we explore the melodic pathways, rhythms (e.g. 9/8, 7/8. 5/4) and harmonies of, as well as connections between these musical traditions. We gather to have fun playing music together, to share musical knowledge and experience, and improve our skills on our instruments. We welcome interested newcomers to join in, regardless of musical experience, and using any kind of instrument (strings, percussion, wind, voice). Bring your instruments and your best mood!

Benefit Voku for a Sudanese refugee family, by SKRAPS Solidarity Kitchen

Thursday September 5, 2024, Benefit Voku for a Sudanese refugee family, by SKRAPS Solidarity Kitchen. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

We are SKRAPS (Soup Kitchen for Radical Actions and Political Solidarity), an Amsterdam-based cooking collective with the goal of transforming rescued food into tasty vegan dishes, and by that showing solidarity with national and international resistance initiatives.

On this Thursday we are cooking a wonderful vegan meal (yes, there will be dessert) from rescued ingredients in Joe’s Garage, raising money for our friend Mohammed and his family, who had to flee the war in Sudan and are trying to build a new life abroad.

In April 2023 a horrible war broke out in Sudan and it has been raging ever since. The humanitarian situation in the country is deteriorating, making it almost impossible to survive. One of the affected people is Mohammed from Al-Qadarif. He and his family lost everything in the war: friends and colleagues, their homes, their jobs. Luckily, the whole family was able to flee Sudan and is now in Egypt. But life as a refugee is hard. They are trying to move on but lack the financial means to build a new life abroad. We are raising money to support for Mohammed and his family to ease their current circumstances and plant the seed of a new beginning. […Lees verder]

VoKu benefit for a (no) border collective

Monday September 2nd, 2024, VoKu benefit for a (no) border collective. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

Progetto20k is a self-organized collective actively struggling since 2016 against the border system. It is located in the region of Ventimiglia, on the Italian side of the coastal border with France. It aims to support People on the Move who face the violence of the European racist migration policies.
The collective has the aim of being a horizontal, anti-racist, transfeminist and anti-capitalist project that takes decisions in assembly. This past months it has been active directly at the border for monitoring and information, and in the city campement of Via Tenda, opening the self-organized space Upupa. Progetto20k has been trying to bring forth their autonomous politics in the struggle, working alongside several humanitarian organizations active on the territory.
The collective recently had to stop their activities this summer, but there is always money needed for house repairs and possibly re-starting again after using this break for internal reflections.
Come along for a delicious meal because the only good nation is a donation 😉

Radical Sunday School: Demands, Limits and Ethics of Activism

Sunday September 1st, 2024, Radical Sunday School: Demands, Limits and Ethics of Activism. From 18:00 till 20:00.

Activism can be seriously demanding. In our fight for all that is right we tend to impose heavy demands on ourselves as well as on others: the fight is never-ending, no cause too great, no action too steep. Many of us (aspiring) activists will recognize the constant (inner) call for action, while also at the same time feeling helpless at the excruciating limits of our own activism – it just never seems enough.

This heavy (self-)imposed burden can create unhealthy, unsustainable, toxic, and even outright dangerous situations.

Tonight’s session is inspired by the book ‘Joyful Militancy’. During this session we would like to explore these pitfalls in activism, the demands and the limits. So that we may better protect ourselves against them, and engage in more healthy, communal, sustainable and, above all, joyful ways of activism.

Open to battle-scarred veteran activists, newbies, and anything in between or beyond that.
