Rebet GuitaR – Rebetiko, the music crossroad between middle east and west from the early 1900’s. Songs about love, joy and sorrow. A musical sub-culture, a music of the lower classes.
“The womb of rebetiko was the jail and the hash den. It was there that the early rebetes created their songs. They sang in quiet, harsh voices, unforced, one after the other, each singer adding a verse which often bore no relation to the previous verse, and a song often went on for hours. There was no refrain, and the melody was simple and easy.” Ilias Petropoulos
Rebet guitar, focuses on the early rebetiko with one guitar, finger-pick style developed in USA by Giorgos Katsaros(George Curly), Kostas ‘Gus’ Dousias.

Proxy Cafe, Book and zine making workshop

Wednesday 20 April 2022 from 18:00 to 22:00, Proxy Cafe, Book and zine making workshop

How to put together long zines and short books for print using only open source tools.

We will look at the difference between the text-centred applications (commonly used by writers) and applications that use the blank page as their starting point. The latter are referred to as desktop publishing software, and they are often quite daunting to those of us who are not professional designers.

The idea of this session is to dive into the deep end of easy software and swim towards the shallow end of complicated tools. We will therefore tour the advanced capabilities of text processors like LibreOffice (a free alternative to MS Wrd, or whatever it’s called these days) and explore the basics of desktop-publishing software like Scribus (a free replacement for Indsign).

For the covers and artwork we quickly dip into photoshop-like utilities such as GIMP. This workshop is geared towards preparing printed material, so people who are interested in making flyers and posters are very welcome too.

Trashy frozen pizza available. Bring your own fancy vegetarian pizza if you prefer.

Doors open at 18:00, workshop starts at about 18:30.

Proxy Cafe, Anarchist Subtitling Workshop

Proxy Cafe, Anarchist Subtitling Workshop, 8 and 10 December 2021

On this day-and-a-half-long workshop we will be playing around with free open source software, in our case, subtitling software Aegisub. Then we move on to learning some subtitling techniques and questioning /all/ the rules.

DAY 1 – Wed. 8 Dec 18.00-20.00 – THE TOOLS
Besides your laptop (all systems welcome, though we’ll pay special attention to Linux), please make sure to bring a mouse, your own headphones, and any adapters you might need. Remember that in order to install new software you will need to know your admin password.
You can also bring your own video fragment if you want to do a personalized subtitling exercise. Pick a ten minute clip in the language of your choice that contains shot changes and features at least two actors or speakers in a dialogue. If you need help plucking that video footage out of the internet we can probably do that on Day 1.
Let us know if you are planning to come, and tell us your languages and areas of interest. That way we can prepare suitable exercise videos.

DAY 2 – Fri 10 Dec, 14.00 – 20.00 – MATH, POETRY AND POLITICS

On Day 2, we would like to concentrate on less technical activities. You’ll be working on your laptop, using Aegisub, subtitling a selected video fragment.
