Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Chocolat (Claire Denis, 1988)

Sunday July 14, 2024, Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: CHOCOLAT * 1988 * Directed by Claire Denis * 105 minutes * In French with English subtitles * free screening * doors open at 8.30 * intro and film start at 9:00.

French Director Claire Denis grew up in west Africa, where her father was a civil servant. The family moved to a different country in Africa every several years because they wanted her to understand culture and geography. This is why much of her work deals with the spiritual and psychological impact of colonialism, especially in West Africa. This was her debut film, and it is about a French woman reflecting on her childhood in a colonial outpost in French Cameroon as a 7-year old girl.
So as you might expect the film is largely autobiographical, recounting her own memories and emotions while she was growing up, and in this case the film has a special focus on her relationship with her family’s African servant.
This film isn’t restless, like so many movies today. It sinks into the world of west Africa, and moves at an ambient pace… allowing sensuality to surface. The film is about identity, memories, and a romance that tries to navigate racism and complicated social structures. This is different from a Hollywood film also because it doesn’t try to exploit our emotions and treat us like children by making things black-and-white. Instead it is a film full of mystery.

Radical Sunday School: Solarpunk, What Would a Brighter Future Look Like?

Sunday 14 July 2024, Radical Sunday School: Solarpunk, What Would a Brighter Future Look Like? From 17:30 till 20:00.

When you imagine the world you want to live in, what do you see?
There is no shortage of events these days that remind us of the problems that exist in the modern world. From wars, famines, genocides to rent hikes, intolerance and local corruption. And as it always seems to be, we can talk endlessly about these problems, their causes, and how awful it is they exist at all
It’s important we talk about them, but we also need to hope for something more than just “solutions”. A better world is possible, and the art movement of Solarpunk is something that can help us give form to the jumble of left-wing, ecological, anti-authoritarian and progressive ideas in our heads.
Solarpunk attempts to combine a utopian vision of our future, where we live ecologically, communally, equally, with a practical and achievable outlook. Come by our session to learn more about how Solarpunk can help you see that future worth fighting for! […Lees verder]

Fundraiser for Manipur

Monday 8 july 2024, Dinner with other indias – fundraiser for Manipur. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

For more than 14 months, the state of Manipur in the northeast of India has been shaken by unprecedented violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, leading to hundreds of killings, waves of internal displacement and the rise of armed militias. Like much of the rest of Northeast India, the world has barely taken any notice of Manipur. Far from being an ethnic conflict, the disturbing developments in Manipur have everything to do with longstanding cross- border resource extraction battles, land struggles, the destruction of a unique highland ecology and the politics of wilful abandonment and neglect.

As the violence in Manipur escalated, multiple shocking reports of sexual violence against indigenous women of the state have surfaced. Join us to raise funds for a brave group of young women who have been supporting relief efforts in Manipur since May 2023. The Young Tribal Women’s Network (YTWN) is a community-led initiative of over 30 women from Manipur and its neighbouring states, who are currently residing or working outside the region. YTWN works to provide food rations, medical and financial assistance, along with other essential aid to those affected by violence. They also assist displaced students to continue their education by gaining admissions to government schools in the capital city of Delhi. See more about their work here.

Voku Benefit in Solidarity with Barroso

Monday 24 June 2024, Voku Benefit in Solidarity with Barroso. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

In Barroso, northern Portugal, the British multinational Savannah Resources, with help from the State and the European Union, wants to open what would become Europe’s first open-pit lithium mine.

Since 2017, the local population has been resisting this prospective mine, which threatens to destroy this region classified as World Agricultural Heritage. We have undertaken legal and direct actions; organized protests and camps; signed petitions and blocked machines.

The company, the State, and the EU call this “green mining”, claiming it is the solution to combat climate change and enable the energy transition. But, in Barroso, nobody forces us to say that gray is green. Nobody forces us to give up the mountains, the rivers, and the history we are guardians of.

This local struggle is an echo of the global resistance. If we succeed in stopping what would be the first and largest open-pit lithium mine in Europe, we will set brutal precedents for future struggles. We know this, just as much as multinationals and governments know it. That is why this struggle is so central. That’s why we fight. And why you should join.

Come to the Voku, or join us this Summer for the Camp in Defense of Barroso (15th – 19th August 2024). https://barrososemminas.org/ […Lees verder]

Cinema Italia: Fantozzi (Luciano Salce, 1975)

Sunday 23 June 2024, FANTOZZI (1975) * Directed by Luciano Salce * 103 min * In Italian with English subtitles * doors open at 20:00, film starts at 20:30. After the film, please engage in sharing comments, ideas, and inspiration with the host(s) of the evening!

A cult film that entered the Italian pop culture, Fantozzi is a sharp critique of white collar’s alienation in modern capitalism, and how the only way to escape is breaking the rules, but, even then, success is far from being guaranteed. Structured in ten episodes, it rotates upon the misadventures of Ugo Fantozzi, his relations with his wife, his colleague Filini, Miss Silvani and others, in situations like Christmas, New Year’s Eve, a trip on the Alps, and so on. A distorted portrait of Italy during its industrialization and the paradoxes of modernisation, which has something to say outside Italy and to contemporaries too.
