Khunth Fundraiser

Monday 18 december 2023, Khunth Fundraiser. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

Khunth is a collective that’s been very recently founded, which is made by and for queer arabs. Our mission is to provide a safe space for queer arabs, and it’s important to mention that our space also extends to the queer bipoc refugee/immigrant communities, and the way we will provide this space is through organizing parties, gatherings, meet-ups and more events where we can get to know each other, connect with one another and build a community together, which is now more crucial than ever given the recent political events that have been terribly bleak to say the least. For this fundraiser, we are collecting money in order to be able to cover the price of train tickets for 15 to 25 queer asylum seekers, who live in camps, so they can come and join our upcoming event that will be taking place on the 13th of January at Vrankrijk. We highly prioritize queer asylum seekers and queer refugees and our community cannot exist without them, and that’s why they’ll also be able to join our events without any entrance fees, and at this upcoming event there will be dinner served which will be offered to them for free! Since we’re a new collective, we do not have enough funds to cover all those costs on our own, especially the train tickets, which is why we’re setting-up this fundraiser. Thank you for taking the time to read this and we hope we’ll get to see you there!

Benefit VoKu for the Bushulo Mother and Child Speciality Center in Hawassa, Ethiopia

Thursday 14 december 2023, Benefit VoKu for the Bushulo Mother and Child Speciality Center in Hawassa, Ethiopia. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

We are a crew from former (and present) members of ‘Foodbank Maastricht’, where food is regularly rescued from being thrown away, given away, and transformed into three-course meals, saving hundreds of kilos of food weekly, and feeding hundreds in Maastricht.
On this Thursday, we are going to cook a wonderful three-course meal from rescued ingredients in Joe’s Garage, raising money for the healthcare of mothers and children in the south of Ethiopia.
As part of the safe motherhood program, the „Bushulo Mother and Child Speciality Center“ in Hawassa supports women during and after pregnancy. Given that the mortality rate in young mothers as well as new-borns is still extremely high in Ethiopia, structures like this one are urgently needed. There, women are receiving information about hygiene and nutrition during pregnancy, as well as information on risks while giving birth. […Lees verder]

Benefit voku for squatters legal defence fund

Monday 11 December 2023, Benefit voku for squatters legal defence fund. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

Come and eat some tasty vegan food and donate to the squatters legal defence fund. We tried to beat Blackstone in court, sadly we lost because they argued they are so rich they can pay whatever the renovation will cost. Now we have to pay, please help us so we fill up the fund and squatters ain’t gotta be scared of the law ever because the solidarity is STRONG.

On October 21st, during the ADEV demo, Prinsengracht 804 and 806 were revealed as squatted. Blackstone took the squatters to court. Squatters lost the houses on November 10th. https://en.squat.net/2023/10/22/amsterdam-two-houses-owned-by-blackstone-squatted-during-the-adev-demo/ […Lees verder]

Thursday 7 december 2023, ORCA (Organized students for Radical Climate Action) with SJP (Students for Justice in Palestine) Voku. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

This evening, ORCA (Organised students for Radical Climate Action) and SJP (Students for Justice in Palestine) come together in a shared effort to cook a cheap, vegan dinner for you.
ORCA is a student group, primarily made up by UvA (Universiteit van Amsterdam) students that advocates for a vision of true climate justice that addresses the root causes of the crises. We share an intersectional, anti-capitalist, antifascist worldview and oppose any kinds of oppression and discrimination. This includes an abolitionist approach to borders, police and (neo)colonialism. We believe in bottom-up revolutionary organising and a new world based on mutual radical care, solidarity, and a regenerative culture. Our goals include the decarbonisation, democratisation, and decolonisation of the Dutch higher education system, and we reject the neoliberalisation of our society, including our educational spaces. Want to find out more? Come to the Voku & have a chat.
Students for Justice in Palestine Amsterdam is a democratic collective of Amsterdam students standing in solidarity with Palestine and the Palestinian struggle for liberation. We are a fully independent and autonomous group. Our activism is firmly rooted in anti-colonial, anti-racist, anti-capitalist and feminist principles.

VoKu benefit + Documentary Screening “Hotel Mokum” for ZZW Rafelrand Mobilization

Thursday 30 November 2023, VoKu benefit + Documentary Screening for ZZW Rafelrand Mobilization. Food served from 7pm, screening Hotel Mokum (Yannesh Meijman, 2023, 30′) starts at 9pm, no reservation.

“ZZW Rafelrand” is one of the last frayed edges of Amsterdam, mobilizing under “Nightingales & Chickens: Unite! 4 de Laatste Rafelranden van Amsterdam”, in light of its threatened eviction starting in June 2024. The rafelrand has been a colorful patchwork of communities on Zeeburgereiland in the East of Amsterdam for over 40 years. Part of its communities is the ZZW student community of 235-people existing for 20 years. We have communal gardens, a give-away shop, organize skillshares & OnsEiland Leven community events. The DIY character of the ZZW community emerged in close relation to its surrounding frayed edges, among which artist community Fort Knox, the trailer community One Peaceful World, rockabilly club the Cruise In, to name but a few.

In light of the threatened eviction of the whole neighborhood, our mobilization is focused on bringing attention to our case, fighting against the erasure of Amsterdam’s frayed edges and its (young) creative spaces of counterculture and self-organization. Donations will go to sticker & flyer printing for ADEV (in collab with Krektek & Kloki) and for printing upcoming sticker & flyers.

We will cook a vegan dinner, while we introduce you to ZZW Rafelrand! Afterwards, there will be a screening & discussion of Mokum Kraakt’s documentary “Hotel Mokum”.

Hotel Mokum (Yannesh Meijman, 2023, 30′), in Dutch with English subtitles.
Hotel Mokum is a documentary about a collective that squatted the abandoned Hotel Marnix in the heart of Amsterdam on October 16th, 2021. Over six weeks the collective transformed the hotel into a home, a self-proclaimed free space and an oasis in a city smothered by hypergentrification. At the height of its popularity, Hotel Mokum got evicted under the guise of fire safety. The story of Hotel Mokum is rooted in protest: against both the housing and cost of living crises, as well as the criminalization of squatting in 2010 that led to the eviction of over 300 squats in Amsterdam alone. The film combines documentary footage, archival materials, and constructed scenes to create a complex and intimate portrait of a hopeful collective and the city they are working to reclaim.
