Benefit for the people recently arrested by the Spanish State

20150112_Joesgarage_benefitMonday January 12th 2015, Benefit for the people recently arrested by the Spanish State, Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm

Statement released by Riseup on January the 6th 2015
Security is not a crime – On Tuesday December 16th, a large police operation took place in the Spanish State. Fourteen houses and social centers were raided in Barcelona, Sabadell, Manresa, and Madrid. Books, leaflets, computers were seized and eleven people were arrested and sent to the Audiencia Nacional, a special court handling issues of “national interest”, in Madrid. They are accused of incorporation, promotion, management, and membership of a terrorist organisation. However, lawyers for the defense denounce a lack of transparency, saying that their clients have had to make statements without knowing what they are accused of. “[They] speak of terrorism without specifying concrete criminal acts, or concrete individualized facts attributed to each of them”. When challenged on this, Judge Bermúdez responded: “I am not investigating specific acts, I am investigating the organization, and the threat they might pose in the future”; making this yet another case of apparently preventative arrests.
Four of the detainees have been released, but seven have been jailed pending trial. The reasons given by the judge for their continued detention include the possession of certain books, “the production of publications and forms of communication”, and the fact that the defendants “used emails with extreme security measures, such as the RISE UP server”.

We (Riseup) reject this Kafka-esque criminalization of social movements, and the ludicrous and extremely alarming implication that protecting one’s internet privacy is tantamount to terrorism.

Riseup, like any other email provider, has an obligation to protect the privacy of its users. Many of the “extreme security measures” used by Riseup are common best practices for online security and are also used by providers such as hotmail, GMail or Facebook. However, unlike these providers, Riseup is not willing to allow illegal backdoors or sell our users’ data to third parties.

The European Parliament’s report on the US NSA surveillance program states that “privacy is not a luxury right, but the foundation stone of a free and democratic society”. Recent revelations about the extent to which States violate everyone’s right to privacy show that everything that can be spied upon will be spied upon. Furthermore, we know that criminalizing people for using privacy tools also has a chilling effect on everybody, and human-rights defenders, journalists, and activists, in particular. Giving up your basic right to privacy for fear of being flagged as a terrorist is unacceptable. […Lees verder]

Benefit for Apatris, Greek anarchist newspaper

Apatris_issue_26_page_1Monday January 5th 2015, Benefit for Apatris, Greek anarchist newspaper. Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm

The street newspaper APATRIS began in 2009 from Heraklion (Crete) and for a year was distributed only locally. In 2010, comrades from other places in Crete began to collaborate with the project. Since then and for about 2.5 years APATRIS has been issued as a Pancreatan anarchist newspaper. The next issue will be published in the second week of October 2013 and it has a nationwide character, i.e. it is based on the collaboration of comrades throughout Greece.

The basic standpoint of the initial editorial team, according to the editorial of the first issue (March 2009), referred to the inability of existing information structures to be used as reliable means of news broadcasting and free expression and therefore any attempt with a reformist character would not be effective. As a means of counter-information, APATRIS may contribute to the co-production of an independent social discourse. As a result, the individual responsibility of each author is stressed. They claim that: “The purpose of this publication is not to shape a common line or agenda that suggests the soundest solution. Our aim is to hear opinions not necessarily in complete agreement with each other, views and events carefully buried by the mass media and altered under the weight of authoritarian interests, but also to perceive the developments around us in order to develop our texts and our actions”. Monday December 29th 2014, Benefit voku for Alexanderstraat 3 squat. Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm

At Sunday 23rd of November this year the upper floors of Alexanderstraat 3 in Amsterdam were squatted. The apartment floors have been largely destroyed in 2007 and after that the house was basically left to rot and decay. The owner, Dick van de Oudeweetering is a well-known speculator who owns more than 100 houses in Amsterdam, especially in the Pijp area. The squatters want to buy some things for the house to make it more fire safe, and to make living there more comfortable, and also to do more research on this speculator and his business partners.

Benefiet voor nieuwe kraakhandleiding

Thursday December 11th 2014, Benefiet voor nieuwe kraakhandleiding, Benefit for the new squatting manual, Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm

Gezellig! […Lees verder]

CNA/ABC supports anarchist and other class struggle prisoners, fund-raise on behalf of prisoners in need of funds for legal cases or otherwise, and organize demonstrations of solidarity with imprisoned anarchists and other prisoners. More info www.abajolosmuros.org
(only in Spanish).

“We believe that prisons serve no useful function and should be abolished along with the state. We believe in direct resistance to achieve a stateless and classless society.”

The [ABC] also works to build alliances with the communities and the social and poltical movements that the prisoners participated in prior to their incarceration. Through these alliances, we work toward increasing the awareness about various liberation movements and the political prisoners associated with the movements. It is through these
coalitions that we continue to ensure that imprisoned comrades are not forgotten by their movements or our own. […Lees verder]

Benefit for renovation of anarchist local Magdalena

20141204_Benefit _for_renovation_of_anarchist_local_MagdalenaThursday December 4th 2014, Benefit for renovation of anarchist local Magdalena in Madrid, Live music with Almudena y Davide, Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm

7pm, vegan dinner – 9pm, short documantary: “Anarchism in Madrid” 2013, 15 minutes with a short talk about the anarchist local Magdalena – 9:30pm Live music with “Almudena y Davide” voice and guitar, Revolting folk songs from Spain and latin america.

The anarchist space Magdalena is an anarchist project that has existed for years in the center of Madrid. Their objective always has had two focuses: To be a meeting point for information for people interested on critical theory and fight experience; and also serve as infrastructure for Anarchist Movement.

During the year 2003, the library was born. Following the library, the bookstore, video library, archive and many more ideas were also born. From then on, they have organized a lot of political activities: meetings, speeches, films, debates, workshops etc. Actually, there are ten different groups meeting in the space, two editorials storage spaces, there is a small radio studio, one room for propaganda and they are finishing with cataloging the archives.

Since the 1970’s until October 2014, the space was rented for very little. However, the contract is finished and Magdalena had to abandon the local and re-think their project in a new space. This change means bigger economical effort and this is the motive for which Magdalena is asking for economic support for the very first time, to continue with the project and cover the costs.

The new Magdalena will open on December 2014. The relocation means a new period for them, and abandoning the second floor in the old building to move into the heart of Lavapiés, neighborhood epicenter of social and political fights in Madrid, this time finally, at ground level. […Lees verder]
