Dario is a university professor who wants to live a quiet life, dealing with research and being a good husband. What is happening in Italy does not concern him. His son, Emilio, does not confront with him, so he tries to connect with him at the university, listening to his father reading poetry in French. He becomes intrigued by politics, thanks to a friend of his father’s, Giulia. Then, a terrorist act attributed to the Red Brigades changes the perception by Emilio forever.

Considered a masterpiece in the depicting the psychology of its characters, Gianni Amelio’s Colpire al Cuore shows a turbolent moment of the Italian recent history (early 80s) through the lenses of the conflict father-son. Notwithstanding the political background, Amelio puts intimacy and emotional transformations at the heart of his poetic view of cinema.

Aman molli: Rebetiko music workshop with Eirini Zogali

Born in Corinth, Greece Eirini Zogali started her music studies in the age of 7 with classical guitar. In 2009 she got accepted in the local music school where she took an interest for the first time in Greek traditional music and in tampoura, a three string instrument with great music history. From tampoura she transitioned to the Greek bouzouki (also three strings) in the age of 15 and coordinated with it deeply. In 2015 she started her bachelor studies with specialization in the bouzouki at the Department of music science and art in Thessaloniki. During her studies there she experienced different styles of Greek, Balkan and Turkish music, with bouzouki as a tool of translation. With the guide of her teachers she learned how to come in touch with the essence of the instrument, which was created by constant experimentation and change in the techniques and the tunings, and that’s how she likes to represent it. After her graduation she got accepted to the Master programme of Codarts, Rotterdam where she studies the percussive side of the oud (an instrument also of great importance to her) and its possibilities, while at the same time she is teaching the bouzouki with students from all over the world.

This workshop will be an in depth presentation of the rebetiko, through its history and of course its repertoire. In this workshop, there will be a discussion and analysis based on the compositions that will be learned, and of course a lot of playing. The workshop is open to every level and every type of musician (vocalist, instrumentalist). The workshop will start at 7pm and last until 9pm. After the workshop, there will be a jam session.

On Friday, September 1st, 2023, 58-year-old Kostas Manioudakis was murdered by cops on a rural road in Crete after being beaten up, for a small amount of cannabis, which has not been yet confirmed. The cops in their statements claimed that he died suddenly from heart attack during police check, which is non-existent and is proven both by the testimonies of passers-by and by the obvious signs of beating. The purpose of the rebetiko night is to financially support the family of Kostas in the difficult struggle it has to fight for justice.

Seeing how our dispute with Hague coffee company Lupi Coffee has escalated, we have to hold a fundraiser. Unpaid work, underpaid staff, intimidation: this company has treated its personnel horribly. Now the boss chooses to intimidate us by dragging us before the judge. Come and support us, and show the boss that we working people stand strong together! As a horeca union, most of our most active members are cooks and chefs, so we offer a high standard. Our case has also been picked up by BOOS so we’ll be showing their episode about it after the meal.

Gezien hoe onze huidige arbeidsconflict tegen Haagse koffiezaak Lupi Coffee geëscaleerd heeft moeten wij een verzamelingsactie houden. Onbetaald werk, onderbetaalde personeel, intimidatie: deze zaak heeft zijn personeel verschrikkelijk mishandeld. Nu kiest de baas voor intimidatie door ons voor de rechter gooien. Kom ons steunen, en laat de baas weten dat wij werkende mensen samen sterk staan! Omdat wij een horeca vakbond zijn zijn de meeste van onze bezigste leden koks en chef-koks dus we bieden een hoge standaard aan.
