Aman Molli: special concert with Mále Vráse

Saturday January 19th 2019, Aman Molli: special concert with Mále Vráse, 19:30, donations welcome.

Once upon a time, in a period between wars, there was migration and sorrow (around ~1920). Folks from different places such as Smyrna, Istanbul, Aegean islands were gathering at the Piraeus docks to survive. While living at the margins of the society and being unable to adapt quickly to the rapid changes that industrial revolution and western countries dictated to Greece, they were meeting at “tekedes”, underground illegal dens, where they could blend their music traditions and experiences while smoking hash, marijuana using shisha and other custom made devices. They used to sing, dance, fight, love and discuss for many hours until the morning or until the police were forcefully stop them and take them to the prison.
Change is inevitable and Rebetiko was not an exception. Metaxas dictatorship in Greece (1936-41) enforce music censorship, which include melodic pathways, rhythms and lyrics. Someone said life always finds a way and music did the same!

That was the birthplace of Rebetiko, more or less…
And that music is what Male Vrase will play and sing with us!

Mále Vráse’ is a Greek slang expression, meaning upset, a mess, bust up. Having in common the love for music from a very young age, the members of Mále Vráse mixed their influences and started their own music journey. Each one with a different musical background, they form their sound with respect to the original gramophone recordings, combined with contemporary music elements.

Mále Vráse band are:
Antonis Laurijsen – Guitar, Vocals
Charis Laurijsen – Bouzouki, Vocals
Dimitris Maris – Bouzouki, Vocals
Nikos Kaliouris – Violin

Two events for APATRIS greek anarchist newspaper with live music

Thursday 21 and Friday 22 June 2018, two benefit events for APATRIS greek anarchist newspaper. Both days with vegan food from 7pm. On Friday 22,  Rebetiko music from Xarris and Mitsos.

The street newspaper APATRIS began in 2009 from Heraklion (Crete) and for a year was distributed only locally. In 2010, comrades from other places in Crete began to collaborate with the project. Since then and for about 2.5 years APATRIS has been issued as a Pancreatan anarchist newspaper.

The basic standpoint of the initial editorial team, according to the editorial of the first issue (March 2009), referred to the inability of existing information structures to be used as reliable means of news broadcasting and free expression and therefore any attempt with a reformist character would not be effective. As a means of counter-information, APATRIS may contribute to the co-production of an independent social discourse. As a result, the individual responsibility of each author is stressed. They claim that: “The purpose of this publication is not to shape a common line or agenda that suggests the soundest solution. Our aim is to hear opinions not necessarily in complete agreement with each other, views and events carefully buried by the mass media and altered under the weight of authoritarian interests, but also to perceive the developments around us in order to develop our texts and our actions”.

APATRIS made a call for a meeting to all existing counter-information media in Greece. The meeting finally took place on June 29, 2013 in Heraklion, Crete. Different collectives active in counter-information took part (Athens Indymedia, Candia Alternativa, Radio Revolt, 98 fm, Espiv, APATRIS, etc). Similar initiatives had taken place in the past (Thessaloniki 2011, Athens) in reaction to the repression of various counter-information media. These past meetings highlighted the need for more structured, regular and nationwide series of meetings.

Benefit for Libertatia squat in Greece. Music with Rebet Guitar

Thursday February 1st 2018, Benefit for Libertatia squat in Greece. Volkseten Vegazulu from 7pm. Music afterwards with Rebet Guitar (Charis Konstantinou).

On 21 January 2018, the fascists attacked the squat Libertatia in the center of Thessaloniki, under the protection of the police after a demo that was called by the Christian fascist groups for the name of Macedonia. The day after, there was a demonstration in the city and 5 people got arrested. All around Greece, there was a call for demonstration against the state and the fascists. It’s not the first time that the police and the fascists work together against the anarchist movement, immigrants, free spaces and queer people. The collective of Libertatia is not giving up and they want to rebuild the social center. This attack is not gonna frighten anybody within the movement. Such an attack makes a stronger movement to fight against the state, the capital, the Christian churches and the fascists.

REBET GUITAR – Rebetiko, the music crossroad between middle east and west from the early 1900’s. Songs about love, joy and sorrow.
A musical sub-culture, a music of the lower classes.
“The womb of rebetiko was the jail and the hash den. It was there that the early rebetes created their songs. They sang in quiet, harsh voices, unforced, one after the other, each singer adding a verse which often bore no relation to the previous verse, and a song often went on for hours. There was no refrain, and the melody was simple and easy.” Ilias Petropoulos
Rebet guitar, focuses on the early rebetiko with one guitar, finger-pick style developed in USA by Giorgos Katsaros (George Curly), Kostas ‘Gus’ Dousias. […Lees verder]
