Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Love Affair, or the Case of the Missing Switchboard Operator (Dušan Makavejev, 1967)

Sunday 29 May 2022, Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Love Affair, or the Case of the Missing Switchboard Operator (Dušan Makavejev, 1967), 68 minutes. In Serbo-Croatian with English subtitles. Doors open at 20:00, film starts at 20:30.

Once again we will be screening another early film by the amazing Dušan Makavejev. In outline, this is the story of the romance between a young telephonist and a middle-aged rat exterminator that goes haywire. Yet in Dušan Makavejev’s hands, this film isn’t just a strange story, but becomes an innovative, free-form exploration on the themes of love and freedom… laying the groundwork for a razor-sharp look at relationships in sixties Belgrade. Breaking away from traditional ideas of narrative storytelling, the film often shifts away, for example, to interviews with a sexologist and a criminologist giving their crazed opinions… or suddenly we find ourselves listening to a poem about exterminating rats. This film is based on a true story, and includes some of the most elegant dramatic filmmaking of the director’s career.

A free-wheeling movie that mixes romance and satire, documentary footage, melodrama and tragedy. And as always with Makavejev, what we are left with is a bizarre cocktail of Yugoslavian-styled surrealism. This is a true cinema of the imagination. It’s one of the crucial films from the Eastern block in the 60s, and it’s a very rare screening, so I hope to see you there!

This will be a high-definition screening.

Fundraiser for Lesvos Mutual Aid Network, music with Your Local Pirates

Thursday 26 May 2022, Fundraiser for Lesvos Mutual Aid Network, music with Your Local Pirates. Food served from 7pm, no reservation. From 9pm, music on the Steve Bikoplein.

Volkseten Vegazulu is back on Thursdays. After the food, around 9pm, music with Your Local Pirates on the Steve Bikoplein. Time to reclaim the square, as the previous years. If the weather is bad, the concert will happen inside at Joe’s Garage.

Your Local Pirates is made up by Joke Kaviaar and Peter Storm, “a couple of singing rebels. We will release our new CD ‘Take No Orders’ this spring. This performance is part of the presentation tour. The songs we make are intended as weapons, not just as creative expressions in themselves. Looking forward to see you all!” https://yourlocalpirates.noblogs.org/

About Lesvos Mutual Aid Network, the network without a website but corporate facebook and instagram… “We are a network of comrades and friends active on the Greek island of Lesvos, with ties to collectives and movements that span the globe. We work to build relationships with people on the island, abolishing dominant norms/hierarchies and the socially constructed boundaries between our communities.
As a part of the broader anti-authoritarian movement, we condemn any and all fascist, sexist and racist behavior. We function through our assemblies, where we discuss topics, collectively take decisions and plan actions. We created an environment based on mutual respect where everyone can take part in equal terms, each according to their ability, each according to their needs. Our actions can vary depending on the needs we encounter and the dynamics of the group. We cooperate only with other self-organized structures, like “Women in Solidarity House”, “No Border Kitchen”, “Binio Squat” and other individuals that are active on the ground.
We as anarchists believe in solidarity that comes from the base and stand side by side with people in need, regardless of whether they come from another country, their age, class, ability, gender, the color of their skin or their sexuality. Here on Lesvos, we participate in multiple initiatives on the ground, all grounded in principles of antiracism, anti-authoritarianism, self-organization and mutual aid, each tackling different aspects of this common struggle.”

Rebet GuitaR – Rebetiko, the music crossroad between middle east and west from the early 1900’s. Songs about love, joy and sorrow. A musical sub-culture, a music of the lower classes.
“The womb of rebetiko was the jail and the hash den. It was there that the early rebetes created their songs. They sang in quiet, harsh voices, unforced, one after the other, each singer adding a verse which often bore no relation to the previous verse, and a song often went on for hours. There was no refrain, and the melody was simple and easy.” Ilias Petropoulos
Rebet guitar, focuses on the early rebetiko with one guitar, finger-pick style developed in USA by Giorgos Katsaros(George Curly), Kostas ‘Gus’ Dousias.

Movie night: Everybody Knows (Asghar Farhadi, 2018)

Sunday 22 May 2022, Movie night: Everybody Knows (Todos lo saben) by Asghar Farhadi, 2018, 132 minutes. In Spanish with English subtitles. Doors open at 20:00, Film starts at 20:30.

Laura, a Spanish woman living in Buenos Aires, returns to her hometown outside Madrid with her Argentinian husband and children. However, the trip is upset by unexpected events that bring secrets into the open.
The outer threat, the inner wound and the mystery in between. These are the determinant factors in Asghar Farhadi’s intimately painful and powerfully acted kidnap drama, crucially anchored by three heavyweight performances from Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Ricardo Darín.
It has been conceived by Farhadi on familiar lines, with ideas reminiscent of his own earlier work and, at one further remove, of influences from Haneke and Antonioni.

Benefit dinner for Ukrainian refugees in Amsterdam

Thursday 19 May 2022, Benefit dinner for Ukrainian refugees in Amsterdam. Volkseten Vegazulu. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

Ever since Russia instigated an invasion on Ukraine, many war refugees have fled to Western Europe, Amsterdam not being an exception. Together with the university collective called Students 4 Ukraine x AUC, we would like to improve their experience and quality of life in the city, by raising money through this people’s kitchen, with which we would buy/repair bikes and provide them to the refugees, as the city is tightening up its policies regarding public transport for Ukrainians. We will be providing bikes to refugees who live in Java Eiland and Science Park areas for their daily commutes to language courses and work.

Benefit VoKu for Vrij Parkeren Leiden, acoustic set from Acid Reflux

Monday 16 May 2022, Benefit Voku: Vrij Parkeren Leiden. Volkseten Vegazulu. Food served from 7pm, no reservation. From 9pm, music on the stage, acoustic set with Acid Reflux (Leiden).

Vrij Parkeren Leiden on the Van der Werfstraat 39 in Leiden has been squatted since February 2022. This new squat was made public during the ‘Woonrevolutie’ housing demonstration on 13 February 2022 in Leiden. Actually, it’s not the first time this house would have been squatted. Maybe the third time over many years? Unfortunately, there is almost but nothing to read on their website https://vrijparkerenleiden.blackblogs.org/, not even a statement from the February squat action.
Recently, the VPL crew found again their way to Joe’s Garage and finally gave some news after such a long silence. The squat is still there and the owner would be threatening to start a court case. Two benefit events have been announced. The first one at De Ontsporing on May 4th, the second one at Joe’s Garage as announced here https://squ.at/r/8o2p, “Currently we are working on renovating the building and we are organizing smaller events for now”.
All your donations during these benefits events will go to legal proceedings and maintenance of the squat. A good opportunity to get some fresh news from the VPL crew and get to hear what’s happening in Leiden.
There is a bit more to read about the Woonrevolutie demo and Leiden on this website https://woonrevolutie.blackblogs.org/
