Rebet GuitarS (Jaap Faber and Charis Konstantinou), a guitar duo, presenting the music of the legendary “Kostis”, the most enigmatic of all greek rebetika artists. 12+1 songs of truly unique guitar duets and black-humor lyrics chronicling the hash dens, prison culture and pickpockets of old Athens. Recorded in 1930-31 on 78 rpm records, under a pseudonym for export to the greeks living in America, research has uncovered the musician, journalist and cartoonist Kostas Bezos as the figure lurking behind the Kostis name, with ties to the famous singer and producer Tetos Demetriades. Rebetiko, the music crossroad between middle east and west from the early 1900’s. Songs about love, joy and sorrow. A musical sub-culture, a music of the lower classes.

Woonstrijdfilmmiddag

Woensdag 20 juli 2022, filmmiddag over woonstrijd in Oost, vanaf 16:00 tot 18:00.

We gaan aan de hand van beeldmateriaal van bewonersacties van de kraakgroep Oost en de Huurdersvereniging Oost in gesprek over vele jaren van verzet tegen deze nog altijd voortdurende aanval op goedkoop wonen.

Op het programma staat ook een nieuwe film over Frans Ondunk, voorzitter van de Huurdersvereniging Oost, maar ook bekend als de sheriff van Oost, die op dagelijkse basis het vuur aan de schenen legde van de huisbazen.

In de geschiedenis van Amsterdam Oost hebben de kraakbeweging en de lokale huurdersvereniging met de regelmaat van de klok dezelfde boodschap uitgedragen. De vastgoedeigenaren van wie de panden werden gekraakt waren vaak dezelfde als die van de panden waarin huurders werden geterroriseerd.

Speculanten gebruiken nog altijd leegstand en verkrotting om huurders uit betaalbare woningen te jagen en zo veel mogelijk winst te persen uit onze wijken. De politiek heeft de wooncrisis doelbewust aangewakkerd. Het gentrificatiebeleid, de veryupping, het mengen van wijken was vijandig tegen de eigen bewoners. De wooncrisis is onder de aandacht van de politiek, maar ze zijn niet bereid te doen wat nodig is om het op te lossen.

Wat nodig is is organisatie van onderop, bewoners die zich uitspreken en samen zich organiseren voor hun buurten. De Huurdersvereniging Oost en de kraakgroep Oost zijn altijd dat soort organisaties geweest. Hoe ziet de toekomst eruit? […Lees verder]

Solidarity VoKu for protesting asylum seekers in Tunis

Monday 18 July 2022, Solidarity VoKu for protesting asylum seekers in Tunis. Food served from 7pm, no reservation.

Since February, a sit-in of more than 200 homeless refugees and asylum seekers in front of UNHCR, protesting the lack of international protection. This while Tunisia is considered a “safe country” for refugees according to the United Nations, being a signatory to the 1951 Geneva Refugee Convention. Yet the absence of a comprehensive asylum law and the lack of bureaucratic procedures implementing international conventions, make asylum requests in Tunisia long and complex. Therefore, access to public services is hard. Regular work is scarce, access to schooling is limited, just like the possibility of receiving free medical care.While Europe is making efforts to resettle Ukrainian refugees, hundreds of people fleeing war and persecution are immobilised in Tunisia just like many of refugees and asylum seekers are blocked in North Africa due to European border externalisation policies! Among them there are families with young children who are in urgent need of schooling and medical care. They are currently manifesting to ask for resettlement to a third country: we support them by spreading their voice to help them be heard! The donations will be used to finance a multimedia project (podcast, video and reportage) to improve the manifestant’s visibility and other related solidarity projects in North Africa.

Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Sexy Beast (Jonathan Glazer, 2000)

Sunday 10 July 2022, Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Sexy Beast (Jonathan Glazer, 2000), 89 minutes, in English with English subtitles. Doors open at 20:30, film starts at 21:00.

The director of this film Jonathan Glazer says that he based it upon an old Greek myth about a man who thought he was happy and the Gods sent him the unhappiest man on earth. That seems to be a good way to look at this wild story about a British gangster (Ray Winstone) who wants nothing more than retire and enjoy his wealth. He lounges at his villa on Costa del Sol, with not a care in the world, until his Mediterranean paradise is interrupted by Logan (Ben Kingsley), who wants him to be involved in a London heist and won’t take no for am answer. That’s the volatile set-up for this raw drama that explodes into surreal proportions.

Especially Ben Kingsley’s infamous character, as a goateed, shaved-headed pit bull of a gangster is a classic, and its a direct contrast to his earlier academy award winning incarnation of Gandhi. In fact in this film he plays a kind of anti-Gandhi….a pushy gangster type which you will never forget. Director Glazer is best known for his inventive video work for bands like Massive Attack and Radiohead, and here he takes cinema head-on in this “high-voltage crime thriller that crackles with chilling style and wit.”

World Music Jam: El Mo Collective

A podium for all kinds of music from all over the world. El Mo Collective, a world music band based in Amsterdam, will organise an evening in which they invite other ‘world’ musicians to take the stage with them. In Joe’s Garage we will bring cultures toghether by the language of music. Do you make music yourself, don’t hesitate to contact us in advance to schedule you in, just one piece or a few, everything is possible!
