Benefit Voku for reunification funds

The funds raised at the Voku will go towards the child reunification costs for a Harriet: a lesbian refugee from Uganda, a mother, and community organizer for queer people in forced displacement based in Amsterdam.
Harriet was at first rejected as her sexuality, and problems she faced as a result, was deemed “implausible” by the Immigration and Naturalisation Service of the Netherlands, and subsequently irregularized.
In the months following her irregularization Harriet amidst the COVID-19 pandemic went on to create and build a safe space and community with Phoenix, which has since become one of the largest self-led communities of/for LGBTQIA+ people in forced displacement in the Netherlands.
Earlier this year, Harriet was finally recognised as a refugee and is now trying bring her five children to the Netherlands from Uganda, after years of being separated. We will be present to explain about the current Dutch asylum system and ways people can help. Donations are very welcome.

Phoenix is a self-led community by and for LGBTQIA+ people in forced displacement, based in Amsterdam since July 2020. In Phoenix people can share their lived experiences and knowledge with one another, receive and offer their support and information related to the intersection of LGBTQIA+ and forced displacement.

We organise weekly meetings around peer support, empowerment, sexual self-expression, providing information about LGBTQIA+ health and legal rights, and developing our community further. Alongside group meetings and support, we also assist our members individually through social-legal counselling, service guidance, personal contact and recreational activities.

There are many undocumented families living in Amsterdam who are not even able to get help from LVV program for undocumented people which already provides not enough security for people who are displaced because of the situations perpetuated by the very same states refuse them to provide basic human rights. We want to support them as much as possible with the benefits from this voku.

Solidarity VoKu for protesting asylum seekers in Tunis

Since February, a sit-in of more than 200 homeless refugees and asylum seekers in front of UNHCR, protesting the lack of international protection. This while Tunisia is considered a “safe country” for refugees according to the United Nations, being a signatory to the 1951 Geneva Refugee Convention. Yet the absence of a comprehensive asylum law and the lack of bureaucratic procedures implementing international conventions, make asylum requests in Tunisia long and complex. Therefore, access to public services is hard. Regular work is scarce, access to schooling is limited, just like the possibility of receiving free medical care.While Europe is making efforts to resettle Ukrainian refugees, hundreds of people fleeing war and persecution are immobilised in Tunisia just like many of refugees and asylum seekers are blocked in North Africa due to European border externalisation policies! Among them there are families with young children who are in urgent need of schooling and medical care. They are currently manifesting to ask for resettlement to a third country: we support them by spreading their voice to help them be heard! The donations will be used to finance a multimedia project (podcast, video and reportage) to improve the manifestant’s visibility and other related solidarity projects in North Africa.

Benefit dinner for Ukrainian refugees in Amsterdam

Ever since Russia instigated an invasion on Ukraine, many war refugees have fled to Western Europe, Amsterdam not being an exception. Together with the university collective called Students 4 Ukraine x AUC, we would like to improve their experience and quality of life in the city, by raising money through this people’s kitchen, with which we would buy/repair bikes and provide them to the refugees, as the city is tightening up its policies regarding public transport for Ukrainians. We will be providing bikes to refugees who live in Java Eiland and Science Park areas for their daily commutes to language courses and work.

Benefit Voku: Calais Squats fundraiser

Earlier this year, activist groups from several countries planned a squatting action in Calais, France. The action was intended to create safe, autonomous housing for people on the move who suffer regular and extreme state violence and repression. Two buildings were squatted under intense police scrutiny. One squat, a tower block of flats, was evicted, with involvement from high-level governmental officials such as Gérald Darmanin. The eviction was carried out by RAID, the tactical police often responsible for anti-terrorist actions, who arrived on a helicopter.

Dozens of people on the move currently live autonomously in the other squat, the ‘ghost house’ mansion on Rue Frédéric Sauvage. This squat has survived continuing attempts by the state to proceed to an eviction. The money raised from this people’s kitchen will go towards the maintenance of this squat and future squatting actions by the activist housing group in Calais.

At the Italian-French border, three self-managed shelters were evicted in seven months. Places where comrades and migrants struggle together against an infamous border.
The border police want to destroy every example of self-management and collective organization. They want to hide and control who they define as “illegal”, they do not tolerate the existence of free spaces in which no one is a guest and everyone can choose how to approach their journey. The repression grows and increases the control on this border which has already killed and which continues to put people’s lives at risk. Destroying these spaces of solidarity, cops and gendarmes and the states that send them, defend the border and make it deadly.
Let’s help the evicted from the shelters to continue the struggle against the border.
