10 years Joe’s Garage

2015_2005_10_years_joesgarageFor 10 years, Joe’s Garage organizes political action, film and debate evenings, discussions and demonstrations. Everyone is welcome whether it’s for advice in precarious housing, employment and other life issues or for a bowl of soup, a good conversation, nice music or a free raincoat from the Giveaway Shop.

As known, there is a desperate shortage of housing in Amsterdam. That is, we believe, generally not because of a lack of actual buildings but due to shortcomings of housing policy, power struggles in politics and greed in this capitalist capital. None of the 50 shades of the cabinet has ever really been able to solve this urgent problem.
Therefore we squat houses. After all, in hollow promises, one can’t live from pretty words and symbolic politics.

Joe’s Garage is also a squat but so much more than just that. Joe’s Garage is an autonomous, political, social and cultural center; 100% run by volunteers and without subsidy. Joe’s Garage shows what’s possible when people collaborate, share and exchange ideas, all in solidarity with each other. For 10 years now.

We, along with many of you, witnessed the neighborhood change significantly in the last 10 years. From a working-class neighborhood with many squats, social housing and Turkish grocery stores to a neat neighborhood with lots of expensive apartments and trendy coffee shops.
This change left no one unaffected. Some are delighted with the nicely refurbished homes, others miss the days you could still drink coffee for 1 Euro.. We find the conversation between people about this matter important and interesting to conduct.

Today we celebrate the autonomy, solidarity and freedom that we took 10 years ago and still cherish every day. Hasta la Victoria Siempre! Überhaupt und Jetzt! Love and Rage! And more of such…

Saturday november 21th 2015:
14.00, giveaway shop and more
15.00, gentrification tour
18.00, people’s kitchen

AdamastorAdamastor: it all started in Amsterdam in October 2013, when five thirsty musicians from Portugal, Holland and Spain, stepped on each other’s toes and since then continue to gladly step on each other’s toes! Since then it has been an exciting time. Every show people discover the new and exciting sound. Through Fado, Bluegrass, Gypsy, sweat, all kinds of emotions, and big bar revenues, Adamastor takes us on a multicultural infectious journey with no beginning nor end…

10 jaar Joe’s Garage

Daarom kraken wij woningen.

Love and Rage! En meer van dattum…..

Concert with X-Ray Cat Trio and Zealous Doxy

X_Ray_Cat_TrioMonday November 9th 2015, Concert with X-Ray Cat Trio (surf veterans from Leeds) and Zealous Doxy (duo voice, banjo from Leeds) . Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm. Music from 9pm till 10pm!

If your looking for dark, raw and tough rock ‘n’ roll the X-Ray Cat Trio are a band you should check out. This surf based band out of Leeds has been delivering the goods since 2009 and are more that just surf outfit. These kats mix rockabilly, psychobilly, Link Wray, punk and more into a cool brew that’s hard to resist. They released the pretty good ep “Bloody Deeds” back in 2014 and managed to gain some international attention. Now in 2015 they about to unleash their full debut album “Out For Blood’. This puppy comes in with attitude that snarls hard with 13 tracks that for the most part, pack a punch. We get only 2 tracks with vocals (both are pretty good) and the rest of the tracks are instrumentals. The band also throws in some killer saxophone on a few tracks and has been messing around with brass, Theremins and other weird stuff. http://xraycattrio.bandcamp.com/

Zealous Doxy from Leeds, two lasses singing sweet, sombre, ruckus harmonies with a banjo. They had surprised us in the bluebell woods, acting as the Woodstock hippie chicks, now they have jumped in the punk van to join the X-Ray Cat Trio tour across Holland and Germany. How much damage can you do with a banjo and a voice? The stunning, soaring roar of Sami Graystone on ‘Finistere’ is frankly captivating, whilst Rose Love provides a virtuoso lesson on the banjo. The raw, acid psych folkery of Zealous Doxy is utterly beguiling and their début self-titled EP – seek out ‘Katie Cruel’ and ‘Doxy’ alongside the aforesaid – should be grabbed before they become as rare as a month of Sundays. http://zealousdoxy.bandcamp.com/ […Lees verder]

Concert with The Flamenco Thief

Monday November 2nd 2015, Concert: The Flamenco Thief. Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm. Music from 9pm till 10pm.

Craig Sutton, better known as The Flamenco Thief, is an English guitarist whose phenomenal rise within the DIY music scene has seen him become one of the busiest touring artists in the country. Specializing in fast rhythmic guitar playing Craig has earned a reputation for mesmerising live performances, in which he uses a Spanish acoustic guitar with the Boss RC loop pedal to blend modern rhythms with time-honoured Flamenco techniques. A particularly resourceful musician, Craig also utilizes the guitar as a percussive instrument, layering metronomic hip-hop beats by carefully beating the body; creating a unique energy that few solo instrumentalists manage to achieve. Craig’s early influences of ska, hip-hop and gypsy swing are evident throughout his music, helping him craft a catalogue of songs that are intelligent but accessible. Craig’s compositions revere Flamenco’s heritage while embracing music technology, and as a result each song is delicately poised between the classical and contemporary. His eponymous debut six-track EP was released in the UK in 2011. The album, Liberating Parts of the Cosmos, was released in 2013 and supported by a three month European tour, spanning 17 countries. In 2014 The Flamenco Thief is back on the road strengthening his status as one of the hardest working musicians in the business with the goal of performing 250 concerts across 40 countries in just ten months.

Concert with Monty Pagan Duo

montypaganMonday September 28th 2015, Concert with Monty Pagan Duo. Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm. Music directly after the food, around 8:30pm.

Ken Parsons on lead vocals, guitar and celtic harp is joined by Mick de Neeve on cello and vocals – the two have played for years on the circuit in Amsterdam and have a wild and eclectic range of songs, covers (both well known and obscure) and original songs. Sara Reith from Aberdeen has played fiddle and tin whistles in Monty Pagan for a few years. Ken and Sara perform Ceilidh sets at events like Burns Suppers so fans of traditional music can expect some great tunes. Rosy de Blecourt sometimes joins in on harp, saxophone and beautiful backing vocals but she is expecting her first child so she may be otherwise occupied. You can expect kicking dance ditties and exquisitely structured ballads from the new ‘Dealing with Demons’ CD. Mad stories, poems and comedy is also in the mix.

Ken Parsons is a Celtic Harper, singer and allround entertainer. What can you expect? Beautiful harp songs, deadly witty short poems and crafted original songs in every posible style, funny, moving, thought provoking” Ken is multi-instrumental and with 20 years of singing experience he has a powerful and versatile voice- you can detect his background as a trained choir singer in his more delicate emotional songs but the next minute you hear the raucous harsh, punk, rock and roll and comedy voice he perfected after years as busker and entertainer in pubs and clubs. His own songs are well honed and he does covers as they should be done. Few singers can match his delivery, diction and rapid fire lyricism. http://www.littleelfrecords.com/
