Do you enjoy working with clay or would like to try but haven’t had the opportunity yet?
Would you be interested in taking part in a collaborative art project?
Would you like to find inspiration in building community and resisting oppression while creating art?

You are welcome to a fun evening of making and sharing in this Collective Clay Workshop at Joe’s Garage. You can use the workshop as an introduction to experimenting with clay as a material, though you are also invited to take part in the beginning stages of a larger collaborative art project.

The host of this workshop (Daarta) is a multidisciplinary artist and Fine Arts and Design student of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy currently working on a project that entails creating ceramic objects that embody oppressive patriarchal forces – which will then be destroyed in an installation-ritual-performance later this year, symbolizing release and liberation.
The collaborative aspect in creating the objects together is a very important part of the work.
The objects serve as effigies and can take any shape and form that represents what the subject means to you personally.

Another aspect of this project is creating a space for sharing, reflecting and exchanging thoughts on building a different world outside of capitalism through community and collective creation and making.
After the workshop, the clay objects will be collected and bisque fired in a kiln. You will be able to come pick them up or allow them to be saved for the performance (which you are also welcome to participate in).

Donations for the costs of the clay are welcome if your financial situation allows it, but not mandatory at all.

We perform a short excerpt from ‘In the solitude of the cotton fields’ by Bernard-Marie Koltès where our dramaturgical analysis underlines the consumerism and the commodification in society.
We sit together and we engage in an open conversation about the topics highlighted by the theatre performance: from commodification to war from environmental disaster to autonomous communities, from the manipulation of love to anything we would like to discuss.
Because The Dealer is always there to remind you that ‘you must want something’. So be aware that you are nothing but a consumer in a consumers’ world. Unless you don’t want The Want.

Fines, what a pain! KO.A.LA. (COins Against LAw) is a newborn anarchist collective that wants to create a fund for fines for activists, squatters and persons that need to cover expenses but can’t.
On november 16th we’ll cook delicious food at Joe’s Garage! We would like it to be the occasion to announce this project and to share questions and tips, to discuss a little with you. Come by, ask us questions, join us and help us build this fund, so that fines expenses wont be a single’s responsibility, but a collective one! All creatures welcome.

Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Sambizanga (Sarah Maldoror, 1972)

Sunday 12 November 2023, Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: SAMBIZANGA * 1972 * Directed by Sarah Maldoror * 97 Minutes * In Lingala and Portuguese, with English subtitles * Doors open at 20:00, intro & film start at 20:30.

This flick takes place during the Portuguese occupation of Angola and focuses on the liberation struggle of African people living under a dictatorship and secret police force. And although there are freedom fighters that are being rounded up and arrested, this film was directed by a woman and therefore she gives it a more unusual and personal perspective. Different from most movies about colonialism, this one is much more intimate, moves at a human speed, and follows the plight of a single mother’s experience when her husband is arrested and disappears. She goes from police station to police station, from prison to prison, searching for him and what she experiences is a labyrinthine Kafkaesque bureaucracy.

It is based on the 1961 novella The Real Life of Domingos Xavier by José Luandino Vieira. When the film was made Angola was still under a dictatorship, and therefore the film had to be shot in the Congo. Many of the so-called actors in the film are real people that were working in the liberation movements at the time. Two years after the film was made a left-wing coup overthrew the government and liberated the country from the Portuguese. This film created an incredible historical president, helping people to understand what was happening on a grass-roots cultural level. Although the situation is harsh, director Sarah Maldoror was able to create a film of pure poetry. The cinematography shimmers, and one critic compared it to a Caravaggio painting.

This will be a high definition screening.

De verkiezingscampagnes zijn van start en dit betekent dat er gedurende de komende weken veel extreemrechtse propaganda zal worden verspreid, zowel in de media als op straat. Met Mokum Tegen Fascisme willen we het Amsterdamse straatbeeld zo ‘schoon’ mogelijk houden. Dit gaan we doen door middel van een poster- en stickercampagne, waarmee we extreemrechtse propaganda overplakken en tegelijkertijd onze antifascistische boodschap verspreiden.

The election campaigns have started and this means that during the coming weeks, a lot of far-right propaganda will be spread via the media and on the streets. With Mokum Against Fascism we want to keep the Amsterdam streetscape as ‘clean’ as possible. A Palestinian filmmaker is writing a script in his New York apartment during the first Gulf war. As much as he tries to shut himself off from the exterior world, images of past wars in the Middle East come back to haunt him.

Aisheen, Still alive in Gaza – Documentary by Nicolas Wadimoff – 86 minutes – 2010 – Arabic with English subtitles
Synopsis: « Where is the ghost town? », asks the little boy to the theme park attendant. « It’s there, right there. But it has been bombed… Do you want to see it? » It is with these words that the film, « Aisheen», begins – an impressionist journey through a devastated Gaza after the war. And the ghost town? Gaza is the ghost town.
Clowns that try to make children forget the bombing, armed with rubber balloons; a beached whale, “as big as a building” that feeds the fantasy; a scrawny, stuffed lion, bizarrely hanging in a cage at a zoo as if it were a trophy. A woman, at the side of the road, who has already been waiting for three weeks for a petrol delivery…
“Aisheen” (Still alive in Gaza) tells the story about the wait after the disaster. The wait for a better future inside the biggest prison in the world.
Through encounters in these otherwise ordinary places (but places that, here, take on another meaning), the film portrays a different Gaza. Poetic, surreal at times. “Aisheen” is a tribute to life…

Radical Sunday School is aided by some lovely Palestinian folks and other comrades to serve some delicious food (feel free to donate a little), have a some Palestinian live music on the Oud at 5:00pm, and a short talk on education in times of crisis, but we also simply want to offer a space to share how we feel. We are a few ex-volunteers from Foodbank Maastricht and we are happy to provide you with a delicious three courses vegan menu as by tradition.Come, enjoy the food, and help us support Kefa with his medical expenses. He’s a friend of ours from Kenya who has been struggling with a bad wound at one of his legs. Thanks to another fundraiser he managed to get surgery but now he needs help to cover the medical expenses of the recovery phase.
